Rayman has been a pretty underlooked iconic character for many years. After spending a long time without appearing in the scene, Rayman made a comeback most triumphantly. Rayman Legends appeared as a sequel to Rayman Origins, once again to bring the character into the spotlight, managing to get a release in every console possible. From PS VITA to WII U, Including PS4 and Nintendo Switch
Thanks to this renewed success, new titles appeared even for smartphones and tablets, making it relevant again. But did the classic fellow innovate a lot in this new release?
About the game
There isn't much to say about the plot of the game, but the fun part about it all is the gameplay. This title is divided into five words with around ten levels each. In this adventure around these worlds, we'll find different imaginative locations inspired by legends and myths. Going from taking inspiration from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea to the Mexican Día de Los Muertos.
Using the 2D platformer mechanics, our goal is to rescue the 700 teensies scattered around all of these levels. But be careful, this adventure is full of danger, and you'll have to face big bosses and challenging levels.
Same as before?
Rayman Legends is pretty similar in many ways to Rayman Origins, but that can be a great thing. And while it doesn't have that element of surprise by its side as its predecessor did, it's still incredible.
This title started off as a WII U exclusive, and you can see this in the way that this is the best version. Don't worry though, each version of the game has something unique to it, but the gamepad implementation in the Wii U is the most interesting and original one.
There are more levels than before, and they are more varied too, even if the gameplay is pretty similar, it is a more polished version of the same game style. Delivering a heart-warming experience.
This title is excellent for the nostalgic ones. Not only does it bring Rayman back into the spotlight even in a greater way than Origins did, but it also superbly uses platformer mechanics. It's not every day you get to experience an adventure that's so simple yet so fulfilling.
Every aspect of this game is worked with love, and there's a lot of effort put into it, making it stand out from many 2D platformers out there.
*Graphics and Visuals: The art department in this title can be described in just one word: Beautiful. The hand-drawn levels and characters breathe new life into the Rayman franchise, and the animations are fluid and full of color, making it feel like a cartoon.
*Gameplay: The 2D platformers fit great the Rayman gameplay as it has been proven throughout the years. The characters' special abilities are interesting and easy to master. The controls are great and the overall experience of the game is incredible. An action-packed platformer set in a beautiful world.
*Sound: The sound design of this game is incredible, the game features a rich original soundtrack, with tracks inspired in the cultures the levels are based on. And the little sound effects present in each level help making it a more lifelike experience.
