There was a lot of buzz around Redfall leading up to its official announcement, but not for the reasons you would expect. The developers registered the trademark around the title, leading the legions of fans to believe this was a title of an upcoming game of Bethesda's more famed franchise. What we actually got was the introduction of a new IP.
Redfall is nearly the polar opposite in theme and gameplay to what fans thought it would be. It's a supernatural first-person shooter that bases on surviving a vampire invasion. Even if it's not the game we thought, Redfall's trailer dropped some content that does bring that allure factor. So what can we expect from the game post-announcement?
How Did We Get Here?
The trailer of Redfall intricately introduces us to the world and narrative behind the Massachusetts town of the same name. The near documentary-style progression of the storyline seeks to give us elaborate background into why this group of gun-slinging protagonists finds themselves staving off hordes of vampire cultists.
Immediately we understand that the story is rich, and there will be heavy focus interactions between characters. Furthermore, we can see that the combat will be diverse. It taps into the wealth of supernatural abilities within each team member. Not only is it going to be versatile, but it also looks like it will be intense engagements throughout.
Besides being treated to the banter of the survivors and battle scenes, there isn't much to suggest how the game will pan out. Clearly, night and day will play a significant role in mechanics as the streets seem to clear during sunlight. But we have yet to see any official gameplay that presents how players will engage with this unusual world.
The extensive trailer of Redfall is something to get excited about, though. It's fast-paced, emotionally charged, and full of action. It's really the first impression you want to make for a first-person action-adventure game. It's easy to say that we're looking forward to more detail being revealed about the gameplay.
Until the Dawn Breaks
How would we describe Redfall thus far only from the trailer? Well, it seems to have the combat intensity of Left 4 Dead while honing the mechanical prowess of Dishonored. Not to mention - the grimy visuals that combine decayed environments with brightly colored magic abilities. Almost seems like the perfect palette of first-person shooter gameplay, right?
We'll have to wait until Summer 2022 to find out. But all considered, it's hard to be disappointed that it's not the Elder Scrolls game we thought it might be. Redfall looks like a game that's seriously going to immerse players into its dark universe. The wheels are in motion, now let's see if it delivers.
