When taking control of a kingdom needs to be modernized, it doesn’t get more simplified than with the use of an app to make decisions impacting thousands. That’s what you get with Reigns, a game with an interesting concept that we will cover today.
Story and Settings
Reigns is an interesting concept that I don’t think we’ve seen in a video game until now. It’s like a medieval version of Tinder and you’ll need to make decisions related to your subjects by reading their concerns and deciding to swipe left or right depending on whether or not you’d like to help out with their problems.
Over the course of gameplay, you’ll meet a good amount of people looking to solicit advice from you, and it is your duty to figure out what must be done. There are multiple subgroups in the kingdom that essentially thrive or suffer based on the choices you make. These are mainly the church, army, treasury and the people.
Therefore, you’ll need to strike a good balance and ensure that everyone is left happy, without making them too happy. If you focus too much on caring for the needs of the people, they might become lustful for power and wish to overthrow you.
While the basic premise of this game is very simple, the actual depth of your decisions is where the dynamic works for a good long-term gaming experience. The decisions you make have a chance of affecting a variety of characters in the game. Therefore, you’ll need to do what it takes to make decisions that can have a lasting effect on your future and the reign of your kingdom.
You can play Reign according to your own personal conveniences as the game really doesn’t force your hand at any point. When you make decisions, they can be spread out over the course of your reign in order to achieve a particular agenda. If you choose to rapidly make decisions that appeal to every subgroup in your kingdom, you’re bound to give your reign a short one as people are going to be evenly unsatisfied and you’ll quickly burn through your cash resources in the treasury. As time wears on, some of the decisions you make can even play out and affect multiple leaders in your kingdom. There are certain points in the experience where you should watch out. One distinct event is the crusades where your population could dwindle right before your very eyes depending on the nature of your decisions.
The graphics of this game are pretty interesting as it uses a basic flat style to represent characters, factions and illustrations. Ultimately though, it is the gameplay that sets it apart. It feels like a more digestible experience that takes inspiration from games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance or The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt.
Reigns is a game that is truly interesting to play, especially thanks to the simplistic art style and controls. You should definitely look towards trying it out.
