Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is a refined version of the creepy prequel in one of the most popular horror game franchises of all time. Taking place a day before the original game, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster follows two unlikely allies who must fight against hordes of gruesome monsters as they investigate the arrival of these terrifying beasts. Like its predecessor, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster has a lot of suspense and a creepy atmosphere, coupled with tough survival horror gameplay that will test your limits. While it might not be as iconic as the game that came before it, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is a fun yet horrific adventure for fans of the series.

Main Game Features

  • Explore three distinct areas
  • Tactical and tough third-person action
  • Control two characters with unique abilities

Story

The story in Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is set one day prior to the original Resident Evil game, and follows Rebecca Chambers, a member of the S.T.A.R.S police force Bravo Team. Sent to investigate a string of murders in nearby Raccoon City, her helicopter encounters issues, forcing them to land in the nearby forest. While searching around the area, Rebecca comes across a halted train, where the passengers have been horrifyingly transformed into zombies. Teaming up with Billy Coen, a convicted killer and ex-military officer who was being transported on the train, the pair search for answers. This adventure takes Rebecca and Billy from winding railroads in the mountains to a nearby training facility, and later to a water treatment plant. Along the way, the pair must fight off a variety of mutated and dangerous creatures, created by the evil corporation known as Umbrella. While the story isn't as iconic as that of the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster tells an enjoyable prequel-style tale that adds some interesting context to the first game's story.

Gameplay

Like other early games in the franchise, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster plays from an altered third-person perspective, with players running through scenes set with cinematic, fixed camera angles. With a limited set of resources, you must collect ammo, healing consumables, and important puzzle items as you investigate your surroundings. Equipped with very low-power weapons, such as a knife or basic pistol, fighting against the strong zombies and creatures can be quite difficult, so it's usually better to run away than stand and battle. Most of the game's difficulty comes from surviving tough, close-quarters encounters with enemies as you try to figure out the game's somewhat confusing puzzles.

The major difference between Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster and other games in the franchise is its dynamic partner-swapping mechanic, which allows players to switch between controlling Rebecca or Billy at any given moment. Both characters have unique abilities that must be used to make progress in the game. Rebecca is able to mix healing items and is quite fast, but lacks defensive power. Billy, on the other hand, is much more resilient in combat and can move heavy objects, but cannot mix healing items. Important puzzle items can be passed back and forth between the characters, which is often required to complete some of the game's puzzles.

Conclusion

When compared to other games in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is slightly tougher, but offers a more diverse world of terrifying enemies to battle. In addition to standard zombies, you'll fight off hordes of leeches, massive scorpions, giant spiders, and more.

Although the puzzles can be frustrating and it's easy to get confused and lose track of your progress, the game is undeniably intense and has a sufficient number of scares. • Interesting enemy creatures
  • Cool partner swap mechanic

Cons

  • Controls take getting used to
  • Some sections are frustrating
  • Puzzles can be tough to figure out
