Rocket Mania Deluxe

One of the most interesting things about Rocket Mania Deluxe is that this is an earlier game from the studio, pop cap games. Now while that name these days may fill you will all kinds of pay to play and pay to win microtransactions fears! Back then they were more focused on just making fun games and fun is certainly what this game is. It is a puzzle game that is all about being a pyrotechnics expert and I will admit when you look at the screenshots, the game does not look all that remarkable, but this is a very addictive and fun puzzle game that is hard to put down once you start.

Like Airplanes In The Night Sky!

There is not really a story at play in Rocket Mania Deluxe, basically, we are working as a pyrotechnics guy and we need to put on an epic fireworks display. The game has matches on the left of the screen and rockets on the right. The challenge is that you need to move the various tiles so that the fuse goes from the match to the rocket! It sounds simple enough, but the real trick is being able to connect multiple rockets at the same time so you get bonus points/coins!

Going All Classic!

The first game mode we are going to talk about in Rocket Mania Deluxe is the classic mode. In classic mode, you have a series of lanterns that are burning at the top of the screen. The idea here is that you are tasked with shooting off so many rockets before all of the lanterns have burned out. This is probably the mode that is best to start your pyrotechnics journey off with if you ask me.

Let’s Go To The Arcade

The best game mode and the one that got me well and truly hooked on Rocket Mania Deluxe was the arcade mode! This has a kind of Tetris vibe about it. There are always tiles falling from the top of the screen that gets in your way and you still are trying to light all of the rockets, but you have to work with the tiles that are falling from the top of the screen. The tiles will keep on falling until they reach the top and when that happens it is game over. I have wasted many, many hours with this game mode! It is incredibly addictive and the best example of what this game is all about.

Thinking Strategically

The last game mode in Rocket Mania Deluxe is the strategy mode and this one was probably my least favorite. It is not bad or anything, it just did not click with me as the other two modes did. The core gameplay is the same here, but this is made more challenging by only giving you a limited number of matches! There is a twist, you see if you plan carefully and can fire off three rockets at once, you will be rewarded with more matches. As long as you do this, you can keep on playing!

8.5

I know that Rocket Mania Deluxe may not be much to look at, but this game shows how back in the day, Pop Cap Games were truly focused on making fun and addictive games without all the microtransaction BS that we see in games of this style today. I had a lot of fun with this one and if you enjoy puzzle games, I highly recommend that you check it out, but be warned, it can be very addictive!

Pros:

  • I thought that classic mode was a great way to get good at the game
  • Arcade mode is very, very addictive
  • The strategy mode is great for those that like to think before they move
  • At its core, this is a very well made and really fun puzzle game

Cons:

  • A little bit of story of flash in the presentation would have been nice
  • It is kind of sad how microtransaction focused Pop Cap Games became over the years
