I love unusual puzzle games and the whole premise of Patrick's Parabox is something that I find really interesting. While the game is not yet complete the developer does have a demo that you can check out and it gives you a great idea of what you can expect. I like puzzle games that are challenging and have interesting gimmicks, but are not too complex to the point where they become frustrating. What we have here is a puzzle game that actually teaches you how to play it and wants the player to succeed and that makes it way more fun in my humble opinion.
Boxes Within Boxes!
The premise of Patrick's Parabox is described as boxes within boxes within boxes. You have to push boxes in and out of each other to mess around with the world and get the boxes out of the maze.
It is the kind of thing that is very hard to explain in words and it does sound very complicated. However, if you check out the trailer, it is actually very easy to get your head around what you are supposed to do. In a small way, it kind of reminds me of that episode of Futurama when they were jumping into the different dimensions in boxes.
Getting Down With The Boxes
Just when you think you are out in Patrick's Parabox, you will go down another level of boxes! I think that this is really awesome and pretty mind blowing. The game is going to have over 350 puzzles once it is complete so it is going to take a while to get through it all. Each puzzle will teach you some kind of mechanic that will help you get through it. They claim that none of these levels are there to just make up the numbers. Being taught how to play the game, but at the same time not having your handheld in order to complete the puzzle makes this so much more fun.
Getting In The Right Mood
I love the visual style that Patrick's Parabox, it has a very chilled out vibe to it and while things are basic at first glance. This is a game that does have a lot of personality that manages to shine through as you play it. I love when the box has little eyes, it is something that I got a kick out of. Speaking of getting a kick out of, this game has a pretty much perfect soundtrack for the kind of game that it is. It is done by the talented, Priscilla Snow and has a real smooth beat to it.
If puzzle games are your jam then Patrick's Parabox is a game that has to be on your radar. This is one of the best and most interesting looking puzzle games to be released this year and I for one cannot wait for all the levels to be finished.
I like how there is a challenge here, but it is not so convoluted that it becomes frustrating and makes you want to quit playing. Be sure to check out the demo as it gives you a great idea of what to expect.
