One of the newer aspects many game developers have been adding is the ability to create your own level or mission. Although usually it's a fairly simple set of modification tools, it has become more popular and somewhat standard in some genres. The opportunity to take your favorite game and make it better has added hours of gameplay and given many the chance to make the game whatever they want (within the limited boundaries of the tool of course). Agetec, who has been working with this functionality since 2000, has finally developed a product that allows game creation to be easy enough for someone to actually completely design an RPG style game. Although the task is still daunting, graphical user interface created has been much improved from previous versions.
Basically the tool is broken down into four main functions, characters and items, world, story and rules, and data management. From these areas you'll be able to put together a decent RPG that will be a rewarding experience. For the most part, it's a fill in the blank type of interface with many options to choose from. There shouldn't be a sense of restriction by the available options as there is plenty of diversity to keep things fresh. Any more and the game would be a nightmare to plow through.
The only noticeable drawback is that it requires a lot of patience and time to get a game off the ground. There is a decent tutorial that can speed things up but there will still be a significant investment of time before your first game will be ready for a full test. This however should be expected and anybody interested in this type of function is probably looking forward to the challenge of putting together an RPG.
Although not the focus of the game, the graphics and audio are not great, but aren't going to be a distraction either. If you enjoy creating your own levels or missions, RPG Maker 3 is going to be worth your time. It will at least offer insight to a type of thought process developers go though putting together RPG games, but it's definitely not for just anybody.
