Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is the latest title by Thunder Lotus Games, a Canadian studio we know very well, especially since they have already surprised us in the past with some incredible indie gems. In Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition, they’ve decided to explore new horizons, going in a different direction from the violent action of the Metroidvania genre, and back into social and resource management.

Of course, some of the most iconic elements we’ve seen from their past titles remain present here, such as the 2D art style, the hand-drawn graphics, the carefully made animations, inspiration from mythology, etc. But now you may be wondering, what’s this game all about, and we’ll talk about that!

About the game

It all starts when Charon, the entity in charge of taking the souls of the dead to the afterlife, decides to retire and pass on her legacy to a new soul guide: Stella, who is also the protagonist of Spiritfarer. Overnight we are transformed into the new boatwoman of the dead and our mission becomes that of making all the spirits that arrive on our boat as comfortable as possible before passing to the other side.

Stella is not the only main character in the game: if we want to enjoy this story cooperative we can do so thanks to the presence of Daffodil, a kitten that we can also control and can perform the same actions as the guide of souls. When playing alone, Daffodil will simply follow Stella and help her in her daily tasks.

Thunder Lotus Games has chosen here to reinterpret the Greek myth of Charon in a much more subtle way than it did in Jotun with the Norse legends or in Sundered with the aesthetics of H.P. Lovecraft; the first thing we see in Spiritfarer is the ferryman retiring is a declaration of intent: with the change of manager also comes a change in the way of doing things, in the way in which the souls are going to travel to the other side.

What's included in Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition?

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition came out as a celebration for the game surpassing one million sales, which is no surprise thanks to the high quality of this unique title. During that time, the game kept expanding, and it added three separate free updates, all of them with new original content that made the game bigger and bigger.

After the third and last free update was released, Jackie and Daria, the game is now finally complete. They launched Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition as the new version of the original Spiritfarer, with the main difference that it already includes all the elements and expansions that were added after the game launched. So, long story short, it's pretty much a "complete edition" of Spiritfarer, this means the original game plus:

• New side quests related to Overbrook

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is obviously the best way to play this incredible adventure. The game has a beautiful art style that reminds us a lot of that of Studio Ghibli. Spiritfarer is one of those games that aims to shine with its ideas without forgetting everything that the medium has to offer.
