If you enjoy tales of the open sea, Sticks and Bones is a hilarious adventure that will have you laughing every step of the way. In Sticks and Bones, you play a pirate who is determined to collect the ultimate treasure—even after his death. In this silent game stuffed to the brims with slapstick style humor, you play a pirate skeleton as he continues his search for a lost treasure.

Very short game

Sticks and Bones was developed by a single person, and thus understandably it is very short. The game is no more than an hour long, and a brisk person could probably get them done in 45 minutes. There’s also almost no sound, apart from a few key instances, and no talking.

This is in part because the game is from an indie developer who made the game completely on their own, but also because it is meant to be a larger game with more to it than this one adventure.

More chapters on the way

Although this game is very short, the developer is currently working on additional chapters to the game. There is currently no known date as to when these future episodes may be coming out. At this time, the developer is keeping Sticks and Bones as a personal project and new episodes will come as he can personally afford to put them out. The author has specifically asked people not to pay for games just for encouragement, but only to buy them if you like the games. It’s a very fresh and appealing message from the developer.

Needs more game play

Sticks and Bones could really benefit from actual combat, or anything else to make it more game like. Right now it is essentially a really long movie with a few segments where you can interact. The game would be stronger if there was more to do beyond slap wars and music.

Monkey Island was able to carry itself even with very simple graphics thanks to the puzzles and witty dialogue choices. While Sticks and Bones is hilarious and has similar slapstick style humor, it doesn’t have the puzzles to help carry the game.

Achievements are Broken

A chief complaint from players is that the game’s achievements are broken. Even achievements you should definitely be able to get right away don’t always pop on Steam. The last three achievements, "The Musician", "Duel Master" and "The Pirate” don’t work even when you do everything exactly.

Sticks and Bones is a solo project by an indie developer. At times you can really see how raw the game is, and where it needs polish. At other times, you will be laughing at how fresh and original this game is. Sticks and Bones is a fun but very short game. If you’re looking for fun and are aware of the shortcomings, it is a fine game to play.
