Almost every book, film and game in the fantasy genre begins in a tavern. It’s hard to imagine any fantasy that doesn’t have a tavern of some kind as an important part of the story. In Tavern Manager Simulator, you’re given the keys to a rundown fantasy tavern, and are tasked with returning it to its former glory.
At first, the tavern is in complete disrepair. You’ll need to earn money by serving guests to make improvements. This is no easy task.
Fast and Quality Service
Guests base how much they tip you on the ‘quality’ of their service. They expect a mug of beer and an appetizer virtually the moment they sit down. The more time you spend on making food however, the more skillfully made it is.
You’ll have to strike a balance between speed and skill to make your guests happy.
Lots of Clean Up
Adventurers aren’t the cleanest people. Clean up is also a big part of this game. This might be cleaning up muddy footprints, clearing away dirty dishes, or sometimes puke. Some adventurers won’t visit your tavern if it’s very dirty—which is surprising given the fact that the player starts the game by covering heaps of trash in berlap and cobwebs are everywhere.
Although the hygiene of the tavern is definitely questionable, it does fit in with the fantasy theme. If you’ve played similar simulators such as Supermarket Simulator, you’ll be familiar with the process.
Decent Tutorial
The demo allows players to get a good feel for how the game works. The tutorial is very well put together, with help available even if you don’t get what the tutorial is asking you to do. Players are tasked with things like finding the door, breaking into your own inn since it’s locked, and cleaning up.
The game also carries you through the first few customers, and helps you figure out how to order new products, collect them, and improve the reputation of the tavern. By the time the tutorial is complete, players have a strong sense of gameplay and can go on from there.
Early Release
The game will be released as an “Early Release” game. Although no reason is cited, the developers are already taking advice from players to improve the game. This includes adding more sound, making the toilet plug up less, and other quality of life changes. We hope that one addition to the game might be getting to overhear stories of fantasy quests people are going on. It’s a bit hard to tell this tavern apart from an ordinary medieval tavern without a glimpse of what makes it “other.”
While it’s possible we’ll be seeing dragon attacks or overhearing tavern gossip with the full release, right now you’re just serving drinks in an ordinary tavern.
This is a very fun game. If you enjoy simulator games and always wanted a crack at running a medieval tavern in a quiet countryside somewhere, this is the game for you. If you’re expecting a fantasy tavern to have fantasy elements, this game may be a bit of a disappointment.
Pros:
- Fun and engaging gameplay
- Sensible Tutorial
- Easy Navigation
Cons:
- Doesn’t really feel like a fantasy tavern
