What the heck is Tekken Hybrid I can hear more than a few of you guys asking! Well, this is a bit of a rarity and I am sure it is something that many hardcore Tekken fans would love to have in their collection. This game features an HD version of Tekken Tag Tournament which was a launch game for the PlayStation 2. It also contains a special preview of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and it even features the movie, Tekken: Blood Vengeance which is a pretty damn fine movie.
No Ammo In This Cannon
I am a massive fan of the Tekken series, but Tekken Hybrid is not canon. The reason for this is because the Tekken Tag Tournament games have been classed as non-cannon by Namco themselves. Each character does still have their ending, but there is no progression of the Tekken lore in this game.
The story of Tekken: Blood Vengeance is pretty cool and features favorites such as Nina Williams, Ling Xiaoyu, and more. The story takes place between the events of Tekken 5 and 6, but the story is most certainly its own thing. It is not an amazing movie, but it is a fun popcorn style of movie.
Covered In HD Paint
Tekken Tag Tournament was a launch game for the PlayStation 2 and in Tekken Hybrid they have taken that game, but made it all HD and fancy. Clearly, the game does not look as good as games like Tekken 6 or Tekken Tag Tournament 2, but the HD visuals do make this the best way to experience Tekken Tag Tournament if you ask me. It noticeably looks sharper than the original and that is all you can really ask for.
The leap to Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is pretty significant and while you only get to play a little part of it here, you will be impressed at how good it looks. Overall, this is a solid package as far as the presentation goes.
Tag A Buddy
The Tekken Tag series is just so much fun and what I love about Tekken Hybrid is that it is the kind of fighting game that is fun for everyone. Tekken Tag Tournament has a deep level of skill at play, but at the same time, a guy who has never played this before can fire it up and have fun playing it by just mashing buttons. This version has all of the characters unlocked from the start. On one hand, I get why people like this, but it does not really give you an incentive to play through the game.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue which is part of this set is basically a demo of the game. It lets you pick a few of the characters and have some fun playing against the AI or a friend, it is a nice addition to the package.
I am a massive Tekken fan and I think that Tekken Hybrid is one of the most interesting releases in the franchise’s history. This is something not a great deal of people actually know exists and I think if you are remotely interested in the Tekken franchise you need to check it out. The HD version of Tekken Tag Tournament is great, the best way to play the game if you ask me. The added content of the movie and the preview of the sequel is great too.
Pros:
- This has an HD version of Tekken Tag Tournament
- It is fun to play no matter your skill level
- The movie is not bad at all
- It gives you a preview of Tekken Tag Tournament 2
Cons:
- All of the characters are unlocked from the start
- I am not sure you would watch the movie more than once
