Torn Away is an Indie adventure game set in the World War II era. The main character is Asya, a 10-year-old girl who’s childhood is shattered by the war surging all around her. The delicate dreams of sailing paper ships on the stream are shattered as Asya and her mother are stolen away and forced to work in a labor camp. After months of hard labor, Asya finds a way to escape. Now she must cross all of Germany and Poland to get back home.
A Touching Story
This game has a lot going for it, but the true heart of the game is its story. Players will witness the struggles of a child forced to grow up quick through a number of touching mini games. These games have you do things like resole a shoe, try to thread a needle with a frayed thread, and light a fire in a stove.
All of the stories you hear, and Asya’s own struggles, have a note of truth to them. The stories are based off of the diaries of real Soviet children. Asya’s struggles are their struggles. It definitely adds a heaviness to this game that simply can’t come from a fantasy world.
Stealth Mechanics and Platforming
Asya’s trip home is filled with danger. Besides the problems of simply walking that kind of distance, enemy soldiers will attempt to stop her. She must hide from them and find ways to escape. The weather isn’t necessarily compliant with this either.
Players can expect to be hiding from enemies and trying to escape in all kinds of extreme conditions. It takes skill and dedication to find ways to escape.
Torn Away holds nothing back in this aspect. The price is real if you can’t escape. The action scenes are touching in their own way, due to the age of the child trying so hard to get home.
Artwork
The artwork in this game is very interesting. It’s described as 3D levels stylized as 2D artwork. The game looks as if you’ve opened the pages of a storybook and are watching them move in front of you. It’s beautifully done and fits well with the story.
If you notice a similarity between Torn Away’s artwork and Inside, a 2D puzzle platformer, you’re not seeing things. The developers have mentioned being inspired by Inside’s artwork for Torn away. The music is also notable and fits very well with the theme of the game. The original soundtrack was inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s music, and is a perfect example of the times.
This game is a must play for history lovers. It sheds light on the forgotten story of "Ostarbeiters" — people, who were forcibly deported from Eastern Europe to work in Nazi labor camps. It’s rare for a game to be both important in an educational sense and enjoyable to play but Torn Away manages to do both. This is one game you should definitely add to your wishlist, especially if you love history or story rich games.
