Raid on Taihoku

Now, here's something a little different. Raid on Taihoku is a game that incorporates a couple of things we haven't seen before in the video game sphere. The first is that the narrative explores the dystopian drama of WWII in Taiwan, a typically unseen region in any media. The second is that the game's mechanics revolve around escape and finding sanctuary, not confrontation like a standard RPG.

It's those qualities that could immediately grab a prospective player's attention. Raid on Taihoku certainly caught ours, with blaring visuals, intriguing mechanics, and an atypical WWII storyline that reels players to learn more. Let's dive in and see if the game can meet our preconceived expectations.

War is Hell

Raid on Taihoku adopts the narrative of real-world events surrounding Taiwan during WWII. The Japanese have occupied the island, inflicting unimaginable cruelties upon the populous to retain order and build a strategic foothold in the Pacific. However, the United States began to campaign to rid the sphere of Japanese influence in hopes of ending the war. The island is caught in the hellish crossfire of the two powers' conflict.

And who suffers the most from the battle? The local civilians. Gameplay in Raid on Taihoku puts players in the shoes of Sayako, a local suffering from amnesia due to the conflict's impact. She awakes in a burning Taipei. With her dog Blacky, she must dodge American air raids and the fallout of war to rekindle her memories and find a safe sanctuary.

This 2.5D RPG is split between two fundamental sides of gameplay, safe and conflict zones. In safe zones, players will interact with characters, puzzles, and environments to unlock pieces of this ever-unfolding narrative. In conflict zones, you'll guide Sayako through a labyrinth of exploding bombs and dangerous terrain to get to safety, where players will see the horrors of war unfold.

Raid on Taihoku is a straightforward game, but its real impact and rich narrative are captivating. Mechanically simple, players can find thrills from navigating through the hellscape that is 1945 Taipei while experiencing an emotional rollercoaster when piecing the story together. The title might not be for the faint of heart, but it's undeniable that there is a good game here.

A Different Perspective

Raid on Taihoku is hardly ordinary, a quality that would immediately be attractive to indie gamers. It combines the dystopian WWII setting of Company of Heroes 2 with the platformer gameplay Ori and the Blind Forest, albeit a bit more straightforward and not as challenging. Those looking for a well-crafted, story-rich RPG will find a lot to love with Raid on Taihoku.

However, we've mentioned that it's not for the faint of heart, and we'll repeat it. Raid on Taihoku's core objective is to shed light on a tragic part of history seemingly unknown to the broader world. Prepare for unpleasantries and moments that'll tug at your heartstrings. But the experience is well worth the try.
