After playing the demo of UNDYING I can tell you right away that I am not emotionally prepared for this game! This is a zombie survival game, but with a real difference. At first glance, you may wonder what is so special, but at its core, this is the story of a mother looking out for her son and if you have kids or younger siblings or whatever, I am sure this is a game that is going to 100 percent tug on those heartstrings.
The story of the game is about a mother called, Anling and her son Cody. The world that UNDYING is set in is overrun by zombies and every day is a fight for survival. One day, Anling ends up getting bit and there is nothing they can do. She is going to turn, but before she does, she needs to make sure that Cody is safe, but also that he can take care of himself.
The story about a parent wanting to make sure their child is ok is something that is very powerful and this game really nails it. I know it is not full of cinematics like The Last of Us for example, but I do think the story has a very similar kind of effect.
Teaching Is The Best Gift You Can Give
UNDYING is a survival game and in it, you have to do the normal things you would expect. You need to find resources, craft items, make and eat food, and so on. As Anling is bitten, you also need to do things to prevent her turn for as long as possible too. What is interesting is that Cody will be watching you the whole time and learning as you play. The AI is very smart and does actually learn by watching you and towards the end, Cody will need to help you!
Zombies Like To Bite
There are many NPCs in the game that you can interact with, trade with, help, and so on and that is great. There are also lots of zombies that want you and Cody dead! You can craft weapons to cave in their heads and you can even get limited access to more powerful weapons too. Eventually, Cody can help you out and shoot zombies with a slingshot to daze them and help you out.
Low Poly, But High Impact
I think the art style of UNDYING is very interesting. They have gone for a very low poly style and while it is low on detail, it is high on heart and when there is an interaction with Cody and his mother, it is still very touching even though it is not done in an ultra-realistic kind of style. I love the way the game looks and the haunting soundtrack they have really helps top it all off.
I love zombies and I love games that have a story that is very impactful and UNDYING has both of those things. This is a very interesting survival game that puts the safety of your child as the main thing driving you forward and that is something very powerful. There is a demo that you can download on Steam and I highly recommend that you do!
