Voltron: Defender of the Universe is a twin-stick shooter aimed at fans of the cartoon who embraced the series in the 1980s. The game features clips of the original cartoon pieced together to make a new story, and relieves heavily on players understanding the lore behind the cartoon.
This is great for people who loved the cartoon in their childhood, but for people who missed the cartoon they may be left feeling confused. This game is mostly focused on fan-service, even down to tiny details like the voice over for the pause and unpause buttons.
Very Short Game
With just three hours of gameplay, there’s not a lot to the story or progress you can make. There’s almost no unlockable content, and the game lacks any real replayability. There are only 3 stages to the game, with just four levels each. Most of these levels are very formulaic, with little variation between them. The backdrops are also very repetitive, switching between space, barren dirt, and jungle.
Disappoint Boss Fights
The boss fights are supposed to be the most exciting part of the game, but the developer of the game chose a turn-based style for these events that really falls flat. All the cat mechs come together to form Voltron, but the Voltron controls are confusing and don’t leave much up to the people involved. The end result is a fairly lackluster boss fight when it should be the most exciting part of the game.
Multiplayer Available
Up to 5 people can control one of the iconic mech-lions to play in this bullet-hell style game. In multiplayer, the boss fights are the same except each turn who is in control of Voltron changes hands. There’s even less to do and the fight is even less interesting in multiplayer. Even the DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles has more story and engages viewers more - despite being an interactive story over a proper game.
Nostalgic Players May Enjoy
Despite this game being fairly flawed, those who loved Voltron may still find this game enjoyable. There are a lot of cut scenes from the original cartoon, a few easter eggs for people very familiar with the cartoons, and normal combat is relatively smooth. The game is also relatively bug free, which is refreshing when many games seem to be published half-way through development.
While Voltron: Defender of the Universe isn’t the worst game ever made, it’s definitely a long way to being perfect. The game offers very little content, the content that is there is repetitive, and people not familiar with the lore may be confused. Although the game is lackluster in a lot of respects, it’s still worth a play for those who were big fans of the original cartoon. It offers a few nods to the fan base, clips from the original film, and multiplayer.
Pros:
- Good for players who loved the cartoons
- No bugs
Cons:
- Boss fights are disappointing
- Game is very short
- No replay value
- Gameplay is repetitive
