World Fighting

Everyone loves fighting games, and mixed martial arts can bring the best of those fighting games together. There’s nothing like pitting a wrestler against a Thai Boxer and seeing for yourself who will come out on top. This budget game for the DS isn’t going to win any awards for sound or picture, but it does offer cheap entertainment that will keep you busy.

The gameplay for World Fighting is fairly simple, but doesn’t devolve into a button masher. The game gives you options to punch, kick, tackle, use your special move, or block. There’s an element of strategy in using these, which will help determine whether you come out on top.

At times button mashing does come into play, such as if you manage to corner your target and need to kick or punch them several times, but it takes some strategy to get them there.

Overall, for a simple and cheap game this is really well done. Despite being an older game developed in 2003, the game is actually better than newer games such as World Wrestling Championship developed by Phoenix, whose gameplay is not as good.

Animations are so-so

While nothing breathtaking, the animations are fairly well done. The actions are smooth, and look reasonable in keeping with the cartoonish characters as they fight. The 3D models look like a sort of blend between cartoon and realistic, and though they’re nothing beautiful, they’re not completely hideous either. Punches thrown look like they actually hit, and other special moves look like they’re definitely putting strain on the other character.

Poor sound

One of the worst aspects of the game isn’t how it plays, but how it sounds. Each player in the game only has two sounds which they switch between, and those sounds don’t often match what you would expect to hear in a fight. The grunts and sounds might be more appropriate coming from a restroom stall than from a fight, and the same two sounds can get annoying after awhile.

Some replay value

The game offers some unlockable content in the form of a swimsuit model you can use after you’ve beaten the game with every character. This prize not only encourages you to play the game through with all the characters instead of just one, but to play it again with your shiny new character. The game also allows two players, which can make the game more fun to play as you both struggle to see who is better at fighting.

Overall, this is a fairly good game for a budget fighting game. It offers some replay value and requires at least a modest amount of skill to play. While it will never be a top tier game, it is enjoyable enough to play. If you like fighting games and are looking for something to play that’s at least a little bit more challenging than a button masher, this game has possibilities.

  • Decent gameplay
  • Has some replay value
  • Unlockable content

  • Sound is repetitive and annoying
