Yog-Sothoth's Yard is a unique life and hotel management sim that blends ecchi themes with occult horror. You play as the new owner of an abandoned gothic mansion that you must renovate into a hotel, recruiting a cast of eccentric employees to help run the establishment. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by how addictive and humorous this game turned out to be.
The core gameplay loop involves expanding and upgrading your hotel while balancing resources. You start off with just a few dilapidated rooms, but can eventually build new wings and specialized spaces like spas, restaurants, and concert halls.
Managing employees is key, as their varying skills and personalities affect hotel operations and guest satisfaction. It reminds me of simulation games like Stardew Valley but with more of a focus on building and personnel management than farming.
Three things make Yog-Sothoth stand out. First is the distinct horror theme, with eldritch abominations as occasional guests. Second is the ecchi element, evident in the maid outfits and suggestive decor. And third is the elaborate relationship system, where you can befriend employees and impact their personal stories.
Eccentric Characters
The characters are a highlight. Recruitable staff range from reapers to dragons, with unique looks and abilities. For example, the adorable Spirit Hunter chef provides home-cooked meals, while the busty android maid excels at hospitality.
Their varied personalities and interactions kept me invested. I grew attached to individual employees, which made me want to improve their workspaces and living quarters. It captures that same charm as befriending townsfolk in Stardew Valley.
Addictive Simulation
Running the hotel and improving it is very addictive. I constantly found myself wanting to upgrade just one more amenity or build an additional wing. The game is structured so there's always a new milestone to reach, like adding a restaurant or spa.
I lost hours optimizing room layouts and managing staff schedules to improve efficiency. Unlocking new employees also adds more options for customization. Fans of games like the excellent Game Dev Tycoon might know the joys of assigning the right workers for the job each time, and that's precisely the kind of addictive rush I felt when playing this game.
Surprising Depth
Despite the silly premise, Yog-Sothoth has surprising depth in its relationships and resource management. Forming bonds with staffers unlocks new story scenes and gameplay perks.
Balancing finances, employee morale, training, supplies, and other factors takes real strategy. I cared about the well-being of my staffers and wanted to provide them with a good workplace. The game does have some repetitive dialogue and UI issues due to the translation. But overall, Yog-Sothoth's Yard succeeds as an addictive and humorous sim with strategic depth.
Yog-Sothoth's Yard is a game for players looking for a unique life sim to get lost in, especially with its blend of eccentric horror and ecchi themes.
Pros:
- Charismatic cast of staffers
