A Space for the Unbound

A Space for the Unbound follows Atka in a slice-of-life drama that is as painful as it is beautiful. The tale unfolds with a mixture of paranormal and ultra-normal teenage experiences, weaving them together in a story that will stir even the coldest of hearts.

With an Indonesian backdrop filled with plenty of familiar building, traditional music, and comfort foods, A Space for the Unbound is rich with tiny details that help bring it to life. These details become all the more important as the game progresses, to help balance the paranormal details.

Cute Graphics

The graphics in the game are pixelated, but in their simplicity, they are still rich with detail. The backgrounds are well imagined and feature rich detail from the items in a grocery store to the stars at night. Often, artists in games skip the details of what is in the scene with pixelated art because the style naturally skips details in other ways. The amount of detail in these scenes is refreshing for this style of artwork.

Heavy Themes

The story behind this game packs a punch. If you were just looking for a cute and gentle slice-of-life to help you get through the weekend, this is not it. The games themes include depression, suicide, bullying and harassment. The beginning of the game starts this up with an emotional punch to the face, and the rest of the game is a hard-hitting series of punches along this same line.

Although these themes are difficult to experience, the game also does a good job of resolving these. It is, in a way, about moving forward even though these traumas are still eating away inside you.

A Powerful Plot

The storyline itself is worth the gameplay. It is a powerful story that will move you and leave you wanting more. Discussing the plot in depth would spoil it, so we will not be going into detail on what exactly happens, but if you are interested in a paranormal that deals with difficult emotions, this plot is extremely well written.

Well-Rounded Gameplay

Outside of the plot and artwork, the game offers a wide variety of play options. If you’ve ever played Attack of the Friday Monsters, imagine it without the Kaiju. The game features puzzles, simple combat, and a helpful map with missions to keep you on track.

This is a linear style game, but it is done so well you won’t mind the simple approach to gaming. Packed in every corner of the game are references and easter eggs to 90s Indonesia gameplay. All these fun little extras alone make the game fun and engaging to play.

This game is a hidden gem in Indie gaming. It has it all. Beautiful artwork, a cozy and enjoyable soundtrack, tons of easter eggs to keep you engaged, and a deep story. Although this game may not be for everyone due to the dark themes, it is nonetheless a gripping and powerful story that deserves to be told.
