For anyone looking for a realistic multiplayer FPS, the sheer volume of options out there can be hard to choose from. It is easy to spend a lot of time simply reviewing games of this genre as opposed to playing them. One release that is getting a positive amount of interest at the moment, though, is Afterconflict development title Afterconflict. This is set in a Cold War setting, whereby the remnants of NATO and the remaining members of the Warsaw Pact fight to the end in the latter stages of a fictional third World War.

Gritty and challenging, this is the ideal shooter for those who are looking for something a touch more authentic than other options out there.

Challenging tactical strategy in a fictional setting

While most shooter games try to come up with a fictional take on a historical setting, Afterconflict goes a step further. In this game, a third World War has broken out amid the Cold War era. This means that you are taking part in a much more altered version of history than you might be used. In terms of gameplay, though, this plays very much like someone who has played the ARMA series might expect.

However, keep in mind that this comes with little of the polish or hyperrealism that one has come to expect from ARMA. Add in that it is still in Early Access, too, and there are some obvious limits to what Afterconflict can offer. However, for what it is, this is a very impressive build so far of a game that should become even better.

Sessions are highly enjoyable and require you to work as a group to make sure you can overcome your opponent. This isn’t a run-and-gun FPS where you can run off on your own and take on five, six enemies and survive. This is more authentic and realistic in that you are just one solder in the field.

An interesting Early Access shooter

At the moment, given that Afterconflict is still in EA, it is hard to give it a great verdict. It lacks the polish of a finished game, and some key features are yet to be implemented. As it stands, though, this is a highly interesting shooter that if you are a fan of working as a team you should find it to be highly enjoyable.

The game itself requires you to put in a huge amount of effort to learn its quirks, and for that some might be put off. As it stands, though, the game is still fresh enough that the usual camp of veteran experts has not yet formed. If you want to see what Afterconflict is all about, it might be worth checking out in Early Access before the game develops a clear player-base in the future.

  • Exciting and authentic tactical gameplay in a good looking world.
  • Requires teamwork and effort as opposed to run-and-gun tactics.
  • Plenty of potential given its Early Access release.

  • Perhaps lacks the finish and polish of competitors such as ARMA.
