The story in Bayonetta 2 is set several months after the events of Bayonetta, and once again follows the titular witch who battles against villainous angels. At the start of the game, Bayonetta and her friend Jeanne are enjoying a night out when the town is attacked by angels, forcing Bayonetta into action. Unable to save her friend, Bayonetta travels to the revered mountain of Fimbulventr in order to locate the Gates of Hell and rescue Jeanne. Along the way, she runs into characters old and new, including a mysterious boy named Loki who is also attempting to reach the mountain summit.
Bayonetta 2 has a story that is full of wild characters and crazy events, centered on a personable and lust-driven witch who loves talking smack and kicking butt. While the game has a lot of lore that can be hard to parse, the dialogue is delivered in a simple and silly way, easy for any player to understand. The grander narrative can get lost in the weeds, but points of the story are punctuated with spectacular moments that are hard to forget. You may not remember every detail of the story once you're done, but Bayonetta 2 is one of the craziest and most intense stories in all of gaming.
Bayonetta 2 is an action hack 'n slash game where players control Bayonetta, a witch who can use her magical hair to summon massive demons and other deadly weapons. Similar in style to games like Devil May Cry or God of War, Bayonetta must battle against hordes of vicious monsters, all of which want her dead. To fend off these beasts, you can use fun features like Witch Time, which slows down the combat and lets you pull off amazing combos and feats of strength. The game also includes some light puzzles, which make good use of Bayonetta's agility and the Witch Time power. As players complete levels and collect experience, they can unlock new combat moves and weapons in the shop, customizing Bayonetta's loadout as they see fit.
There are a handful of new gameplay features in Bayonetta 2, namely the Umbran Climax mode, which you can activate by filling up Bayonetta's magic meter. When activated, Bayonetta can use the full extent of her power, summoning humongous demon allies and extending her combos with additional attacks. Your performance in each level is rated at the end, with “Pure Platinum” being the highest achievable rank. There are 16 story missions to beat and multiple difficulty levels to try out, which will test even the most skilled players.
Bayonetta 2 is more than just a great action game, as it's one of the best sequels of all time. The game improves on every aspect across the board while fixing many of the problems that the first game had. The combat feels better, the visuals are more intense and exciting, and the story is set on a grander stage.
Whether you simply like button-mashing through battles or you're addicted to pulling off the largest combos possible, Bayonetta 2 is a must-play game for those players who love both spectacle and the supernatural.
