If you enjoy action RPG games with a lot of basis in mythology, then you might want to check out Xuan-Yuan Sword VII. This title, released by SOFTSTAR and DOMO Studio, is a 2020 release with a hugely popular background. You take on the role of Taishi Zhao, a swordsman of the era who has found himself wrapped up in a very challenging, emotionally charged storyline.
You need to make your way through a chaotic realm filled with Chinese history and mythology. Face off against various foes, power up your skills, and become strong enough to find the hidden story behind what is going on. How good, though, does this action RPG manage to feel?
A quest for peace filled by chaos
The themes here are relatively simple: Zhao’s family is injured, and to return the world to normal and live a happy life he must overcome various obstacles. From facing off against terrifying beasts of mythology to combatting the political machinations of the era, there is much to be seen in this exciting RPG. As the seventh game in the series, Xuan-Yuan Sword VII helps to further expand on the ARPG routes of the series.
While some might find some similarities to games like Nioh, the combat is typically much easier than one would expect. Face your way through foes, beast and man, and make sure that you can improve your character by developing them over time. Work on your skills, improve your character, and edge your way through what is a rather enjoyable storyline. Combat is simple enough, with an easy to learn dodge and stamina system akin to Dark Souls. The visuals are impressive, too, with great detail in the various foes that you face off against paired with epic, fresh environments.
Work alongside your companions, too, and over time you find that you are able to build a trio of heroes strong enough to survive in what are some very unfavourable circumstances.
Few of its own ideas (7/10)
While Xuan-Yuan Sword VII has some of its own fresh thinking, you can immediately see the influence of Nioh on this game. However, it is fair to say that this game is quite easy; you can easily beat most foes and bosses using the overpowered stances feature. Combat is fine, and exploration is enjoyable enough that you manage to enjoy a fun and engaging experience.
Pair this up with other useful modes like crafting, and you can see why this game is able to hold its own in a crowded market. While the writing can get a little lost on itself at times and can become needlessly confusing, there is the basis of a rather excellent game waiting for you at the bottom of Xuan-Yuan Sword VII.
If nothing else, it’s nice to see a Chinese-themed game that manages to avoid falling into generic, well-worn tropes.
- Interesting storyline, art style, and world building make a big difference.
- Combat is fresh and frenetic, if a little too easy at times.
- Enough to do to keep players coming back for more.
- Lacks innovation; most of its best ideas have been done already.
- Probably a little too easy relative to most of its genre companions.
