In a time period when the best of what Cartoon Network had to offer was admittedly fizzling out, Ben 10 was one property that continued to keep the channel relevant. This boy wonder with the power to become any kind of mutant that a situation may require had the scope for tonnes of cartoon content, happened to have a rather gripping narrative throughout it’s run and thanks to all of this, made it the ideal property to make a video game. Or perhaps three in the form of the Ben 10 Triple Pack.
The Ben 10 Triple pack is a collection of three popular DS Ben 10 titles so obviously, this game plays like any other Ben 10 properties. However, it also plays like other cartoon adaption games like SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time to name a few. This aims to be a value for money pack for Ben 10 fans but is there good value to be had here? We find out in our review of the Ben 10 Triple Pack.
Triple The Action
Firstly, lets begin with Protector of the Earth. This is the pick of the bunch in terms of the games provided. This game offers the best variety of monsters, the best puzzles, platforming and combat to make use of Ben’s mutant forms. Plus, the game has a unique story that doesn’t rehash the cartoon serie’s content. Admittedly its not award winning stuff but it’s new and that’s a bonus. The game looks the part too and overall, this is where you will find most value.
Next is Ben Ten Alien Force, a game that was a good one on the Wii but much less so on the DS. The game has a lot of the same mechanics and approaches as Protector of the Earth. However, all of which is a little more unrefined, more limited in scope and in terms of the content, this one does just rehash the main plot of the show, so nothing new here. It’s still a fine game though and does add value to the pack.
Then lastly you have the Vilgax Attacks game, which is the least appealing of the bunch and tells the story of the final series of the cartoon series. This game is most ambitious and suffers due to this. The lack of monster options, the poor writing and the lack of interesting mechanics make this game one that fans would do well to miss out on.
Overall, this Ben Ten Triple Pack is one that fans of the series will find value in. There is unique content, a full interactive overview of the show’s content, a wide variety of mechanics, puzzles, platforming sections and combat skills to learn and while the games do get progressively worse, that doesn’t mean that fans will not find joy from each.
We would say that causal gamers should give this a miss as there are better cartoon adaption games out there. However, for fans of Ben 10, this is a great deal.
- Great value for money
- Unique content not included in the show
- Combat is consistently good
- Games get progressively less appealing
- Writing is inconsistent
