As one of the most popular Japanese entertainment IPs of its era, Beyblade has many fans. Kids got used to playing with Beyblade replicas in school, and many fell in love with the TV show and its associated content. However, Nintendo 3DS owners might remember the 2017 release Beyblade Burst God. This release was brought out by FuRyu, was generally quite well received by fans of the series.
How does the game hold up today, though? Five years on from release, does it still feel like a game worth trying out?
A failed attempt at improvement
If you played the game that came out before this, Beyblade Burst, you have more or less seen everything that you need to here. This game has very little to add to the table in terms of add-ons. It is basically an upgraded take on the original. It contains much of the same gameplay loop which fails to really attach itself to the mania and chaos of Beyblade series. Gameplay is pretty rudimentary, and the small screen of the 3DS makes most of the actions a bit of a chore. Graphics are decent for the 3DS, but for a game released in 2017 it lacks polish, freshness, and anything that really makes it a big improvement over the original.
A generic Beyblade experience (4/10)
It is pretty hard to come up with too much to say regarding the game. Like the original, you have actual physical Beyblades provided as part of your purchase. In matches, you essentially need to twist the little part on your Beyblade, let it start spinning, and see if you can defeat the other Beyblade in ‘battle’.
Most of what goes on feels automated and lacks any kind of real meaningful input from the user. Most of the gameplay feels pretty generic, with very little to really make it stand out from the crowd of other Beyblade titles. There is precious little interest in the story, too, with a barebones storyline making it very hard for us to recommend this title overall.
Pros
- It was released in 2017, so it should be cheap
Cons
- Lacks polish, depth, or any real interesting storylines
- Combat itself is boring and takes very little skill to play
