Booze Masters: Freezing Moonshine

There are some games that fit neatly into their niche, and then there is Booze Masters: Freezing Moonshine. The game self describes as, “an unsettling first-person adventure game with elements of plant cultivation, puzzles, and lots of high-proof beverages.”

Diving into the game, it doesn’t ever turn into a specific genre. Loosely, the story is about an influencer who normally makes paranormal videos. When her fans turn against her claiming her work to be fake, she decides to do just a ‘normal’ video of her life.

Things turn upside down when she tries to relax in a motel full of genuinely weird people. The player is almost immediately greeted by a bunch of extremely eccentric characters. The motel host is a snowman, a doctor, and a crazy alchemist.

Their shenanigans are the core of the game, which alternates between hilarity and making absolutely no sense.

Welcome Insanity

The game makes little to no sense. Once you have accepted this and moved on, the game is a delight to play. Think of it in terms of Goat Simulator, or other crazy but sincerely fun to play games. Just because it makes no sense, doesn’t mean it can’t be a delightful romp to get through.

The game will have you do everything from solve a whodunit to fulfill a prophecy, all while making copious amounts of alcohol. You’ll need a vacuum for this, and a taste for eating snow.

Terrible voice acting

Although the game is fun to play, it’s not perfect. The voice acting for the game is awful. They range from sounding like an AI voice (and not the good quality ones) to someone who is just reading from a paper with no emotion.

This may be a part of the joke, since the person with the worst voice is also supposed to be the ‘social media influencer’ but it’s hard to say.

This is an indie game, so often the developer is a one-person show handling as much as possible themselves, but this is one case where hiring talent might have been helpful.

Smooth Performance

While the voice acting leaves much to be desired, the game itself is fairly polished. There are few to no reports from players of crashes, bugs, or other problems with actual gameplay.

The graphics are also relatively good. While the hair is stiff and it doesn’t touch some of the big box games out there for graphics, they are still crisp and smoothly animated. The graphics never detract from the overall gameplay, and some of the more important moments are very well done.

Booze Masters: Freezing Moonshine isn’t for everyone. It takes a certain type of humor to appreciate the silliness of games like this one. If you enjoy the insane chaos of games like Goat Simulator, chances are you’ll appreciate the over-the-top game play of Booze Master.
