The story of Control takes place inside a facility that serves as the headquarters for the Federal Bureau of Control: a government organization tasked with investigating the most mysterious cases. Your goal is to explore the building, known as the Oldest House, in search of clues as to what’s going on with this mysterious organization.

The playable character is Jesse Faden, who, in all honesty, might be one of the best characters Remedy has ever made since the days of the original Max Payne. Her story is gripping and her character is marvelously well written, which only serves to elevate the quality of Control’s plot even further.

Remedy Entertainment has flirted with the concept of an episodic narrative before, most notably in games like Alan Wake and Quantum Break. In Control, remnants of that same structure can still be seen, but the game takes a much less restrictive focus, inciting the player to revisit areas they have previously explored to complete sidequests.

There are also some nice unlockables to be found by completing certain subquests. Most of these extras are outfits for Jesse, and while not all of them may be as visually pleasing as the player’s starting clothes, they fit well with the game’s plot.

Raw Power

One quick look at Control’s visuals will tell you all you need to know about the visual direction of the game. Not only does it look fantastic: every area has been carefully crafted to look like something straight out of a classic sci-fi film. In a single word: Control is art.

The game makes extensive use of some nifty next-gen features, like ray tracing, to elevate the overall visual impact of some scenes. If you’re playing on older hardware and don’t have access yet to these features, don’t worry: the game still looks pretty decent without all the bells and whistles enabled.

The sound design is also superb. Every gunshot and eerie sound heard throughout the Oldest House will keep you on edge, which is just perfect for the game’s insanely addicting gameplay. All in all, Control Ultimate Edition is one of the finest games Remedy has ever produced; and all that without mentioning the DLC, which is stellar in its own right as a proper expansion to the game’s main storyline. This is Control the way it was meant to be played, and for a game as good as this, the Ultimate Edition is the only version you should get.
