If you are looking for a flash platformer shooter nostalgia kick like no other then look no further than Critadel. This game takes all the finest parts of those classic games that we all remember from when we were growing up and puts them all into a fantastically realized title that pushes the envelope and really shows its players a tremendous time. Run, jump and blast your way through these games convoluted yet intricately designed levels and experience all the best bits from this genre with a few new additions. Let’s get into it.
So, this is a roguelike/shooter/platformer that functions a lot like games such as Soviet Jump Game, Brawlhalla, Super Meat Boy and Cuphead, so you have a pretty good idea on what this game is like. Critadel is jammed packed to the absolute brim with frenetic gameplay that pushes the boundaries of how much you can fit on a screen. That being said, the action is very easy to follow and the tight, responsive controls help you keep your head in tough situations. The game essentially functions as you would expect with running, jumping and shooting until there is no one left but yourself.
Utilizing platforms, weapons and superior tactics, you must blast around the screen like a lunatic and defeat your enemies with over 100,000 unique weapon configurations. Dodge, roll and maneuver your way through this well-designed title and defeat your enemies to reach the top of Babel. That’s a lot. As you progress through the game, you will encounter a large number of branching paths that allow you a modicum of choice regarding where you go. This kind of choice is not something that comes up often in games like this and I, personally, found it to be a refreshing change of pace. One thing I will bring up is that this game does have a weapon durability system. This means you can’t hold on to a weapon you like or use a lot due to it breaking which can be annoying but does add another sense of tension into the combat.
The sprites in this game are absolutely fantastic! The world and level designs are solo brilliantly realized. Everything in this game looks stunning. Its crisp, clean and perfectly rendered to help players follow the action and stay on top of their game. I found the levels to be interesting and unique. There was never a moment where I felt anything was out of place or that it did not match the aesthetic.
The characters are brilliant and super easy to see in the chaos. Mostly thanks to their constant place on the screen along with their vibrant hair or clothing that helps you pick them out amidst the insanity.
There certainly is a story here but it does take something of a backseat to the general action. You must ascent eh tower known as Babel and kill anything that gets in your way. Why are you climbing it and what will you do when you get there? Well, those are things for you to find out when you play the game.
This game is a fantastic action platformer that will serve you well. Give it a go as soon as possible.
