Being from the UK when I heard that Not Tonight was a “post Brexit management game” I knew that I had to check this thing out! While I went into this expecting a lot of laughs, from what I have seen so far, I found myself to be kind of like “hey this could actually happen!” as I saw more and more what the game had to offer. I am not trying to be political here at all, but the subject matter of this game is certainly very interesting and kept me compelled enough to keep wanting to find out more!
Welcome To Relocation Block B!
The plot of the game takes place in a UK where Brexit talks have not gone well. As a result, in Not Tonight, this far right government has managed to take control of the UK and they have kicked out all citizens of European heritage! If you can work hard and prove your worth, they may let you stay in the UK. We play as a character referred to as Person of European Heritage #112 and we are going to get some work as a bouncer as we try to see if we can stay in the UK.
Working The Doors
In the game, we work as a bouncer whose job it is to work on the doors of various places. You start out at a pretty run-down pub, but you do get to work more classy clubs, music festivals, and exclusive parties as well. You have to check people's IDs, see if people are on the guest list and of course, deal with any customers that may be getting a bit too drunk and causing trouble. You can just try and live your life, work hard and see if you can get back to your “normal” life in the UK that you had before Brexit. Or, you can join a resistance and fight against this oppressive UK government.
Power In Pixels
This has a 2D pixel art style and it actually works. With a subject matter as serious as Not Tonight is working with, I have to be honest and say that I thought a more realistic art style might have been the way to go. However, I soon got over this and became very invested in what was going on due to the politically charged story. You can upgrade your apartment and yourself even which changes things. Overall, I think the style is pretty striking and gets the message across really well.
I have to say that the subject matter here is going to make Not Tonight a game that is not for everyone. I found the whole thing very captivating and kind of sad as I do actually know some people who have been affected pretty badly due to Brexit. At the end of the day, this is a management style of game and if you usually like those then I am sure you will get pretty invested in what is going on here.
Pros:
- The post Brexit setting is something I found very interesting
- I liked the moody 2D visuals
- It has some very witty and thought provoking writing
- I liked how you could play it straight or try to fight the power!
Cons:
- The story is certainly not going to be for everyone
- The 2D visuals might be a tad moody and depressing for some
