Deadly Premonition is a horror game that places players in the role of Agent York. Agent York is an FBI Profiler with a special interest in the murder of young girls. As an added quirk, Agent York has Split Personality Disorder, and frequently talks with his other personality, Zack. The story is set in a vast city called Greenvale and follows Agent York as he investigates the murder of an 18-year-old girl.

Quirky, Original Game

At first glance, Deadly Premonition looks like nothing more than a rip-off of a similar horror game, Twin Peaks. The game has a modest cult following however, because for those who can survive the clunky controls, poor camera angles, and lack of basics like a high-quality map, the game offers an interesting plot and some humor. That humor is in full swing as soon as the game begins, so players can get a good idea if the game is for them or not early.

Agent York’s split personality can become wildly inappropriate at times, and the humor can sometimes be at odds with the horror aspects. As an example, Agent York may start cracking jokes right after witnessing the murder with sexy jazz music playing in the background. He also has a running commentary about rape, people urinating into human skulls, and other completely random things.

Navigation is a Slog

Deadly Premonition was never a beautiful game, even when it originally came out in 2010. Although the huge and detailed map is definitely unique, the truly open world concept is ruined by the map system. There’s no way to create personal waypoints, to expand to see different parts of the map, and driving by car is extremely slow. To make matters worse, driving across the entire huge map by car is something you will have to do repeatedly throughout the game.

World Record Holder

Deadly Premonition holds a Guiness World Record for having the most polarized view of the game from critics. Giant gaming review websites like IGN hated the game, while equally well-known critics such as Destructoid rated it perfectly.

Players seem to feel the same way about the game, with a cult following adoring it for its originality, and others marveling how any game this bad could exist.

Deadly Premonition is an extremely divisive game. Whether this is a beloved classic to add to your permanent collection or an appalling waste of your time depends on what you like in a game. This is a great choice for those with an off-beat sense of humor, or who prefer plot over ease of game use.

For those who find long boring stretches of gameplay hard to deal with, or have difficulty with camera issues, the game may end up being more frustrating than enjoyable. It’s best to take a look at a few gameplay videos before purchasing this game to see which camp you fall in.
