Eight Days

You may be scratching your head at what is Eight Days for the PlayStation 3, but back in 2006, this was one of the most hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 games. It was a game that Sony used to show off their upcoming PS3 console and for the most part people were very excited about this game.

Wow Its, Huge!

Perhaps Eight Days was trying a little too hard and was too ambitious? I say this because the scale of the game was said to be the biggest map ever seen in a video game. Well at that point, I am not sure if games such as Red Dead 2 or GTA V would have eclipsed this. Anyway, the game was to be set in eight different states!

Good Or Bad?

Eight Days on the PS3 was developed at a time when huge story-driven games were becoming Sony’s thing. The idea of this game was that there was a good and bad character and that the good guy's character's son was abducted by a crime gang and you wanted to get him back. You could play as both characters and this was something that the London studio making the game had big plans for.

By all accounts, you could play this in multiplayer and interviews stated that they intended the game to be kind of like Uncharted in the gameplay department. A huge rumor at the time was Sony canned this game because they did not like how it had no multiplayer modes, but that is now said not to bet the case. Eight Days had been in development for a long time and a lot of money had already been spent on it. Back in the early days of the PS3 (thanks to the crazy price tag) sales of the console were not superfast.

That Movie Trailer!

Part of what got people excited about Eight Days was the trailers Sony showed off. This was a very early game that Sony used to show off the power of the PlayStation 3. Sure, it may not look amazing by today's standards, but this game was a massive deal for the PS3 at the time and it was a game that when people were talking about the PS3 often brought up as a massive exclusive for the console.

With that in mind, it is very strange how this game just got canned and no one seemed to really care. To be fair I feel perhaps a reason for this was that Sony did start to shift focus to their Killzone and Uncharted demos so that is perhaps why people forgot all about Eight Days.

So, is there any code of Eight Days floating around out there? There is plenty of gameplay footage so there must be code somewhere. It looks like a cross between Uncharted and Grand Theft Auto and it would be very interesting to see Sony come back and give this game another look. It is certainly one of the most interesting canceled games to be announced for the PlayStation 3 and even in the early state you can see Sony spent a ton of money on this.

10/10 (In terms of how much I actually want to see and play this!)

Pros:

  • It looked to be very story-driven
  • The presentation had a movie feel to it
  • The idea of playing with a friend was very interesting
  • Lots of great set pieces
  • One of the most interesting PS3 stories

Cons:

  • Was perhaps too ambitious for its time
  • Is there a playable version out there?

Game Reviews

This game's gorgeous trailer unspools like a pricey Hollywood blockbuster. Here's tbe scene: A desolate desert truck dop plays host to intense gunfights and fisticuffs, then gets blown to hell with killer pyrotechnics straight outta a Jerry Bruckheimer flick. If the gameplay can match the visuals, expect box office gold.
