As one of the most popular sporting events in the world, Formula 1 racing has fans from all over the globe. It’s a major sporting event backed up by a huge number of videogames developed by Codemasters. The 2012 equivalent, F1 2012, took on many properties of other classic Codemasters releases. Like many incremental releases, though, there was not a huge amount of change. It was, though, the first title released until the Codemasters Racing label, which lasted until 2016. Where on the podium, then, did the 2012 edition of F1 finish?

The same old laps

While at the time 2012 was seen as an improvement, it done little to build on the edition that came beforehand. The title used the EGO Engine, and it played very similar to a range of the typical games of the era such as MotoGP titles. In terms of style, this is a game that was, for its time, pretty decent looking graphically. It was easy to play and to control, and it provided users with an interesting roster of F1 stars and legends to pick from and play as.

In total, you had 12 teams to choose from with 24 drivers in total. You were given the chance to take part in the 2012 season of the F1 calendar, whilst also having access to the Champions Mode edition and other modes, including the new Season Challenge mode.

A solid part of the franchise

The challenge with F1 2012 is that it generally did not add much over previous versions of the series. It was, though, a good enough racing sim that most enjoyed it both online and offline. The small changes that were included made the gameplay a touch smoother. At the same time, the addition of the Season Challenge mode helped to give more casual players a chance to play F1 without losing valuable time or having to commit to a full season mode.

While some criticism was put on the fact the game had not moved on much from previous iterations, it was well-received by fans of the sport itself. Most found that it offered a decent enough challenge for players, whilst giving newbies to the series a more overall approachable experience. However, the fact that previous game modes which were well-liked by players were removed caused a bit of consternation.

Overall, though, the 2012 edition of this long running series was a good choice for just about any player of the era. Today it feels a bit worn out and dull compared to more improved releases of the 2020s, but it’s still a good racing sim that done a good job during a period of low inspiration for the sports industry.

Pros:

  • Good quality of cars and drivers to pick from
  • Interesting variety of modes to improve options

Cons:

  • Removal of some previously enjoyed modes was ill-received
