These have been rough times for Codemasters, after the EA acquisition, there were some worries as for the identity of the company. Still, Codemasters is back to bring us the new entry in the most popular F1 game series in the world. This new entry in the series is aiming to transform the whole franchise. The official F1 games won’t ever be the same, and we like where things are going right now. So, let’s talk about what’s changed.
About the game
This is the official game of the F1 professional league, and as such it has the responsibility to offer a realistic representation of the king of automobile sports. This year the game is dubbed Braking Point, and there are some changes to try and change the franchise once again, with some twists.
Aside from all the great and exciting things you get in this game, one of the most, if not the most, interesting things about the game is that it introduces a fully-fledged story mode. This is complete with cinematics and actually a great narrative.
Sure, it is still a racing game, and the story is not the most complex one, nor is it full of intense twists and surprises. Nonetheless, it is still to see how much effort they put into adding new, interesting content to the franchise. And it's actually something you wouldn't even expect to be present in an Formula One game, but here it is.
You get to choose a starting driver and follow their entire career in the racing world. There're dialogues, allies and enemies, and much more in the story. It truly is a full story, and that's incredible to have into an F1 game.
This story mode also adds content to the gameplay experience, since there are more challenges added to complete points in the story. It's not all about the big circuits and races. The cutscenes are nicely worked out, especially considering Codemasters' F1 team had never attempted to do this before.
Could it go a bit faster?
Even though the F1 cars are incredibly fast, the story and the momentum of this game are very slow. It takes a long time for the story to build up to an interesting point. And that's not all, but there are also some cool things you'll have to wait for before unlocking. So be patient and take your time, even though you're driving some of the fastest cars around.
F1 2021 is a great example of how to add content to a sports game to make it more appealing to the general public. Sure, F1 and other racing games such as Dirt 5 are aimed at more people than just average sports games. These titles appeal to the huge audience who enjoys racing games, whether they are realistic simulations of real sports or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The visuals are great, and the narrative is well developed even though it is slow. There's a lot of customization available for the racing modes. And the expert mode makes things even more interesting, by making it incredibly realistic, allowing you to fine-tune every detail of your car and your driving experience.
