One of the main precursors of modern action games is the beat 'em ups, as they basically started this trend of going around on a level and just beating every enemy that crosses your sight. They were all very popular in the early 90s, but most of them failed to really catch on with the mainstream audience due to their repetitive nature, which made them rather boring after a while. But they still manage to come back to life with a hit every once in a while, and Final Vendetta is just that.
Developed by Bitmap Bureau, Final Vendetta tries to redeem the genre with a completely new take on a classic title. So, let's see what this game is all about!
About the game
We mentioned earlier that this is a new take on a classic title, and that means, of course, that it's a remake we're talking about. This is a new take on the mythical Crime Fighters, as the game is called in Japan, or Vendetta, as we got to know it. Now, we know that in these kinds of games, one's more busy beating up the bad guys than following a storyline, but of course, there's a plot in this game. So, what's the story here?
The dangerous Syndic8 gang is spreading across London and has just kidnapped Claire Sparks' sister. Those of you who have played Double Dragon or Final Fight already know that there is only one way to solve this mess: by beating up all the members of the gang, of which there are dozens. Oh, and don't forget to destroy trash cans and cars along the way. And eat some food off the ground.
What we're trying to say is that the new beat 'em up Final Vendetta has just been presented as a tribute to the classics of the genre. And as you can imagine, Claire won't be alone, as she will be escorted by her colleagues Miller T. Williams (a professional fighter) and Duke Sancho (a street fighter), both available as multiplayer partners in co-op mode. Pretty good huh?
A solid return?
Even though this game is already a remake of a classic from the 90s' it is also clearly a homage to some of the most iconic titles from those years, like Double Dragon and Final Fight. The game promises to be a solid revival of the legendary title originally released by Konami, with great doses of action, and of course, a lot of beating bad guys up.
The characters will be able to keep the basics of the classic but add new mechanics with more moves and combos than the original saga. And now that it's getting a release for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch, it will hopefully gather enough attention to bring more great games of this genre back.
Final Vendetta is a solid return of a classic, and Bitmap Bureau (who developed Xeno Crisis and Battle Axe) did an impressive job at bringing all the feeling of a classic back. And the best part of this is that they made it even better than the original. Incredible visuals, great soundtrack, excellent gameplay, and everything you could ask for in a remake of a classic.
