Five Nights at Freddy's 2

When it was first released Five Nights at Freddy's 2 had a lot of eyes on it. The first game came out of nowhere and was an absolute monster (an animatronic monster that is!) of a hit. One of the most interesting aspects of this game is that it is actually a prequel to the first game and the way it ends up rolling into the first game is done really well.

Can You Survive!

The lore of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is part of what I love about this game and series so much. Once again, you are working as the night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Your job is to keep things safe…. And survive the night from the animatronics that wants to shove you into a suit which will kill you. What I really like here is that you can find little things that fill in the lore to the game. I really thought it was cool how the game ended which takes us to where the first game would start.

The More The Merrier

The gameplay is you being in the security office. You cannot move around, but you can move your head to look at things. This time around there is no security door just a long black hallway that is creepy as hell. You can use the cameras to keep an eye on the animatronics. You also have a flashlight as well.

The game always has you on edge. You can use this animatronic head that you can wear which will trick the animatronics into thinking you are one of them. You also have a music box that you need to use in order to keep one of the new enemies, this super creepy puppet at bay. I like the idea of this, but in all honesty, this is what I spent most of my time doing. Making sure the music box was always going as this puppet does not screw around.

While the wheel may not have been reinvented here in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, it is super tense and it will certainly make you jump out of your skin time and time again. If you survive 5 nights, you beat the game, but this leads to a harder 6th night and even a custom night where you can change various options.

Atari Goodness

One thing that I really like about the game is that when you get caught you can get the chance to take part in one of a few retro-style mini-games. These are a fun addition, but what I really liked about these was the way they would expand the lore of what is going on here.

I think that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is a fun follow up. The way it expands the story is cool and the game once again will make you jump time and time again.

7.5

It may not add a ton in terms of the gameplay, but if you liked the first game you will have a fun time with this one here.

Pros:

  • I like the presentation of the game
  • The way it expands the lore is cool
  • The two new animatronics are very creepy!
  • It is very challenging
  • The retro mini-games are fun

Cons:

  • Having to keep an eye on that music box can be annoying
  • Not a ton of changes to the overall gameplay

Story

In this sequel to the first game, Five Nights at Freddy's, players control Jeremy Fitzgerald, the newest night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza restaurant. By day, the restaurant is a joyful place, where children play games and interact with the colorful animatronic puppets. By night, things take an ominous turn for the worse. According to a coworker, the animatronic characters are programmed to seek out the closest source of sound and locate it. Additionally, older models of the puppets are also in storage, with some problems of their own. As night falls on Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, Jeremy discovers that these puppets are much more deadly than he was told. Taking place during one week of work, the story of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is more complex than the original, adding story elements to flesh out the narrative. During your time on shift, you'll receive random calls giving you more information, along with creepy mini-games that clue you into the backstory. A surprise ending is also in store and will shock anyone who has played the first game, adding more anticipation for the sequel, Five Nights at Freddy's 3.

Gameplay

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is a horror game overall, but it controls a lot like old school point and click adventure games. Sitting in the security office, you cannot move, but are only able to watch and wait. Through a series of surveillance cameras, the entire restaurant is visible, giving you a full view of the floor plan. During the night, the animatronics come to life and start to hunt you, slowly creeping their way toward the office. To stay safe, you can use spotlights and flashlights to briefly stun them, but they will continue moving before long. To make the game harder, you are not able to block any of the various entrances to the office, which will keep you on your toes.

The game is split into seven shifts, which you must survive through by tracking the animatronics and using various items to impede their progress. If any of the animatronics make their way to the office before the night is over, you die and are forced to restart. Occasionally, short retro mini-games pop up, which add bits of lore to the experience and keep the game from getting too repetitive. If you are able to survive the entire week, a bonus night opens, which you can customize to your liking.

Conclusion

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is a good sequel that has more of the same great gameplay, but with a few interesting tweaks and changes. It can be very tough at times, but that shouldn't deter any big fans from beating the game.
