If you have ever frequented an arcade, you have undoubtedly seen and perhaps even played an on-rails shooter game. Now, usually these games will throw a series of enemies your way, such as mobsters, ninjas, monsters or dinosaurs your way. Then it will be your job to lay waste to everything in your path to progress with a physical gun in your hand acting as the controller. Well, GG is a popular series that shakes this up a little. Allowing players to shoot potential love interests with love serum, allowing you to live out your widest fantasies. We find out in our review of GalGun Returns.

This game plays like other on rails shooter titles such as Time Crisis, Virtua Cop, House of the Dead, Killer7 and Ghost Squad. This game series is a wonderful re-imagining of the on-rail shooter format. However, does this newest instalment live up to the hype?

A Remarkable Return

Let’s begin with the visuals. While this game goes for a much more simple anime style, it works for the series. The presentation is very clearly Japanese, with loud colours, cute character models and simplistic backgrounds. However, this simple art style is backed up with very slick transitions and animation. So overall, the game feels very clean and well presented.

Then as for the gameplay, it’s about as simple as it gets so long as you understand on-rails shooters. This game will present you with wave after wave of cute girls and you will need to point and shoot to get them hot under the collar. Players will be rewarded for fast reactions, combos and accuracy, with the best shooters being able to consistently hit the androgynous zones. It’s a fun mix up on the normal on rails tropes and we are here for it.

Then in terms of story, we will be honest, the game is limited in this area. The game has a wide variety of characters, a series of game modes like Doki Doki mode, great settings to explore, tonnes of costumes and over 400+ different panty varieties. However, when it comes to an actual narrative, aside from the sole purpose of flirting and teasing young teen girls, there really isn’t enough here to call a story.

The Verdict

Overall, we would say that this game is right up there with the other games in this series. What we would say is that unless you are looking for new costume and character variants and some new settings to enjoy, there isn’t a tonne of difference when compared to past iterations.
