I feel like I have not played a visual novel in a while so when I heard about GNOSIA I knew that I had to spend a little bit of my day talking about it with you guys. This is a sci-fi visual novel that also has some detective work and a bit of RPG style about it too. As of me writing this the game is not yet fully released and it is a Japanese game so you will have to keep an eye on how long it takes for the English translation to drop.
The GNOSIA Threat
The story of the game takes place on a spaceship that is drifting through space. Onboard are a crew, but things are not as they seem as there is an enemy onboard and that enemy is called the GNOSIA! They can emulate anyone so you can bever be sure he is real and who is a GNOSIA!
It is kind of like the movie The Thing in many ways as you try and figure out who you can trust and who needs to be put into cold sleep to try and eliminate the threat. The story can go in many directions with characters having their own special paths so there is going to be a lot of replay value here.
The Art, It Is All About The Art
There are two main parts to what makes a visual novel in my opinion, the story is the most important aspect, but the art is a very close second. The art in GNOSIA is great, it truly is fantastic. It has that sci-fi look that you would expect from this story, but what I really like about the art in this game is the overall style. It is very hard to explain, but it has the look of a manga which is not uncommon for a game like this. However, it looks more like it is on an actual page than a computer screen and it is done, very well.
Talking It Through
As GNOSIA is a visual novel, you know that reading is what you are going to be spending much of your time doing. However, paying attention to what people say is extra important here. The idea is that you talk to people and try and figure out if they are who they say they are or if they are one of the GNOSIA! You have to have the right amount of evidence before you make a decision and just as much as you are suspicious of other people, they will be suspicious of you.
There are RPG elements here where you can change up your character so people are more likely to listen to you and it kind of works like a class system which is pretty interesting.
I know that I used this comparison already, but I am getting major The Thing vibes from GNOSIA. I will say that I am also getting a little bit of L.A. Noir here to from the way you have to basically interrogate people to see who they really are. As someone who loves sci-fi, this is a story that I am very excited to get into. I think the branching paths and different conclusions are going to make this a game that you can play through time and time again.
