GUNHEAD

GUNHEAD is a new FPS roguelite from developer Alientrap that challenges players to board and navigate procedurally generated alien starships. As a guns-blazing space privateer, you must fight your way through hordes of cyborgs and security systems to destroy each ship's System Core. With strategic jetpack-fueled gameplay and over 50 weapons to choose from, GUNHEAD delivers an addictive, high-octane experience.

I'm a huge fan of fast-paced old-school FPS games, so I was immediately drawn to GUNHEAD's intense action. Like Serious Sam, the game throws swarms of enemies at you from all directions, forcing you to stay on your toes and utilize your mobility to survive.

The procedurally generated ships also provide a fresh experience each time you play. While the basic flow is similar, the layouts change drastically, ensuring you can't just memorize a path. This keeps you engaged as you explore for objectives and learn the ins and outs of each new vessel.

A Jetpackin' Good Time

The jetpack totally changes up the flow of gameplay in exciting ways. Unlike most FPS games where you're confined to the ground, in GUNHEAD you can boost into the air to reach higher vantage points or quickly strafe around enemies.

It reminded me of the low-gravity sequences in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and added a whole new dimension to combat and traversal. Chaining together boosts and hovers to soar around levels kept movement feeling dynamic.

An Arsenal Like No Other

With over 50 distinct weapons, GUNHEAD offers one of the most extensive arsenals I've seen in an FPS. You can equip 4 weapons at a time, leading to countless loadout options. I loved experimenting with different combinations to match my playstyle. The sheer variety also ensures encounters never get repetitive.

Whether I was roasting aliens with a flamethrower, sniping from afar with a railgun, or unloading rockets at a giant mech, I always had the right tools for the job. The guns feel immensely satisfying to use thanks to great sound design and visual feedback.

Shiny Looks

While the visuals in GUNHEAD are a bit simpler compared to the stylized comic book flair of Borderlands, the clean, cel-shaded look serves the fast-paced action well. Environments have a sleek, futuristic vibe with neon accents that pop against the stark metal walls and floors. I will admit the character and enemy designs are fairly generic with none of Borderlands' signature personality.

However, this stripped-down aesthetic ensures there are no distractions during the heat of combat. Everything is clear and easy to parse visually even when swarms of enemies descend from all sides. The bold colors and highlights on interactive objects also make objectives easy to spot. So while GUNHEAD's visuals may lack pizzazz, they allow the smooth, intense FPS action to take center stage.

GUNHEAD is an absolute blast that provides hours of intense, high-flying action. If you're a fan of FPS classics like Doom and Quake, or more modern hits like Destiny 2, don't hesitate to give GUNHEAD a shot.
