I thought that the first game was fantastic, but I Expect You To Die 2 looks like it could be even better. The first game was one of the premier VR titles released and now they are taking what they learned when making that game and expanding on it here with the sequel. This is a spoof on the whole spy genre and it is like an escape room/puzzle game type of experience as far as the game goes.
Stopping World Domination
The whole way that I Expect You To Die 2 spoofs stuff like James Bond is hilarious! The game does not take itself too seriously and it kind of reminds me of that Lesley Neilson movie, Spy Hard. We play as a secret agent, the ultimate super spy! The evil and maniacal Zoraxis thinks that you are dead and this is the perfect chance to go deep undercover to try and stop him from taking over the world.
The game will give you six missions to play through. The first one is set in a theatre as you try to save the prime minister and deal with the famous actor John Jupiter. It is all very amusing stuff and very well presented.
The presentation is a great deal of fun, it has a kind of cartoon look to it, but I Expect You To Die 2 is great in that the things you interact with and the various locations are all incredibly well detailed. This actually ties into the gameplay as it makes things much clearer. As this is a VR game, they have done a wonderful job in making sure that you are fully immersed in this world. This happens right at the start with what is probably the best intro sequence you will ever experience in a VR game.
To really make you feel like you are in this world, they have some fantastic sound design. The music and the sound effects are great, but it is the voice acting that really makes this like you are in an interactive movie. That actor I talked about before, John Jupiter is voiced by Will Wheaton which is cool!
The Clues, Always Be Working The Clues
The gameplay is best described as that of a puzzle game. I Expect You To Die 2 gives you a bunch of objectives that you need to do in each location before moving onto the next. From disarming a bomb to using a coroner’s report to get past a tricky scenario there is a great deal of variety at play here. Each of the 6 missions has its own goals and objectives so there is a fair bit to sink your teeth into here. For a spy game, there could be a tad more action, but I think it does what it does very well.
One of the best things about the gameplay is the accessibility. They have made this so you can play it sitting down or even with just one hand if you want. It makes it one of the more comfortable VR experiences.
If I had to do a list of the top ten VR games, I have played I Expect You To Die would be on it and now I can say that I would probably replace that with I Expect You To Die 2! This is what VR is all about in my opinion. It is a fantastic immersive experience that is all wrapped up in a hilarious spy spoof that will keep you entertained all the way to the very end.
- I love the story that the game tells
- It features 6 missions to play through
- They give you different control options
- The presentation is incredible!
- It may not have enough action for some people
- Not sure it is the kind of game you could go back to once you know all the puzzles
