When you have original content to base your game off, it's pretty hard to do an adaptation that fans will enjoy. And even though some developers alter some elements of the original content, it is strange to see them completely come up with an entirely new plot and theme. LucasArts tried its luck with Indiana Jones again in 1992 when they released Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for the PC, Amiga, and Macintosh. But if it isn't in the movies, what is this game all about? Well, let's talk about it!

About the game

Nowadays it can be quite hard to imagine, but back in the 90s graphic adventures were all the rage. After all, they allowed for some great narrative and storytelling, in a much simpler and direct way. That's why it is no surprise to see that they went for this style in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

In this game, Indie travels half the world together with Sophia Hapgood, an old archeologist friend now turned into a medium. Looking for the lost city of Atlantis before the Nazis get there first. Yes, the Nazis are back here, as they are trying to collect the ancient Orichalcum from Atlantis, a strange and powerful energy source that would help the advance of the Third Reich and bring it closer to their world-dominance goal.

To find the location of the lost city of Atlantis, Indie will need to find the Lost Dialogues of Platon, as they apparently hide the final clues to the location of the sunken city. Sophia also uses her medium abilities to connect with one of the ancient gods of Atlantis, Nur-Ab-Sal, to help them as guidance.

It a worthy of a fourth movie

Whereas at first glance it may sound like a really basic idea for a plot, and it sounds quite cheesy, it was very well developed. As you get into the game you'll be amazed by the number of details and the special attention this game pays to storytelling and narrative through the characters and their interactions.

Similar to games like Monkey Island, this point-and-click adventure had a lot of story options based on dialogue opportunities. You have to carefully choose your dialogues to interact with the NPCs and explore the world clicking on just about everything on screen.

The Indiana Jones trilogy was complete before the release of this game, and we can all forget about the fourth Indiana Jones movie. This game was a bold move to create an entirely new adventure for one of the most popular characters in the history of adventure movies and somehow managed to pull off a great game.

Review 10/10

Indiana and the Fate of Atlantis is an incredible game, nearly up there with the best of Monkey Island in its genre. The attention to detail and the quality of the storytelling and narrative presented in this title make it feel like a legit fourth part of the franchise.
