Once again we are back talking about what has become the king of rhythm game franchises, one that's so accessible that literally, anyone who likes pop music can enjoy it. Of course, we are talking about one of the latest entries in this franchise, Just Dance 2021. This is a yearly release that never fails to deliver and arrive on time for Christmas parties. Of course, this is one of the best games for those days, as it can bring the entire family and friends together to just have a good time. So, let's talk about Just Dance 2021.

About the game

Even if you're not a gamer, chances are you have already played, or at least heard about this franchise. With over 10 years of yearly releases, and sometimes more than once a year, Just Dance 2021 is one of the latest entries in the series. But just in case you don't know how this franchise works we'll go through a quick look at what this is all about before getting into this game in particular.

Just Dance 2021 is still basically the same core game as all the other titles in the franchise, a rhythm game based on motion controls. There’s a preselected list of licensed music from the most popular hits of the year and some all-time classics too. You select the theme and as you start playing you’ll see a stylish and colorful video -these can sometimes be incredible productions beyond many music videos- with one or more dancers in them. Depending on the song there can be different dancers to choose from, and you have to dance to their rhythm. To do this you’ll use motion controls to mimic the movements you see on screen, and the game will score you depending on how accurately and timely you replicate them.

This game included the integration of Ubisoft’s subscription system called Unlimited, which basically expands the song selection available for the player a lot, with tons of new songs you can choose from and download your favorite ones.

The king of dancing

Just Dance is an incredibly popular game, especially when it comes to party games, as it requires little to no video game comprehension to be enjoyed. And unlike titles like Dance Dance Revolution, Just Dance is completely based on licensed music, with the most popular hits of each year available. It also centers more on the dancing aspect than the arcade element. Have you ever seen a pro Dance Dance Revolution player? You'd hardly qualify it as dancing. Whereas in Just dance, you'd hardly qualify it as gaming.

Just Dance 2021 is a good party game, especially if this is your first Just Dance game. But if you're a more experienced player, you'll see that this game actually lacks some game modes from previous games.

Actually, this could be a step back for the franchise to make it more accessible for casual players. It is also a problematic title for the PS4 and PS5 versions, as it no longer supports the PlayStation HD Camera or the PS Move, which means it relies on the mobile app to track your movements. And while this is accurate tracking your movements, it can be much less ergonomic to hold your phone all the time while you're dancing.
