Released in 2002, developed by Koei and published by THQ, Directed by Takashi Atsumi sequel to one of the PS2 launch titles Kessen II was released. It is based on a legendary history of China as narrated by Luo Guanzhong in which he describes the uncertainty and violence of the third century in China, more romantically. So, how does Kessen II play?
About the game
Kessen II is based on the Romance of Three Kingdoms story, but with the added element of much more fantasy. It follows historical battles in an abridged manner but keeps all the relevant details in there. It is a strategy game where you get to choose and use the strategies in really long matches, but if you're clever enough, you'll win every time.
Three Kingdoms
The first Kessen game was based on historical events in Japan, whereas this sequel is loosely based on the three kingdoms. Much like the Dynasty Warrior games, but in this case, the element of fantasy is really important. And the gameplay between Kessen II and Dynasty Warriors is immense, as the latter one is a fast-paced multiple-enemy combat game known as musou, and Kessen II is a strategy title.
Kessen II has some incredible visuals that make it worth playing just by itself. However, there’s much more to it than the visuals, as the gameplay is great and really solid. There are many characters and well enough combats and battles to play in this lengthy game.
Pros:
- Great visuals
- Solid gameplay
- Good art
Cons:
- A bit repetitive
- The fantasy part is overdone
