Here's to the game that sparks a platform niche - now it's returning in full valor under the title Metroid Dread! The series that sparked a platforming revolution seeks to allure players back into the node that started them all. A brand-new side-scrolling adventure awaits with new-age graphics and an intriguing storyline continuing from nearly two decades ago.

Metroid Dread hasn't had an easy development ride. It was already once canceled back a few years ago as the game hit technical limitations. But with new hardware and a dedicated fanbase, now seems the right time to unleash Samus' next chapter on the world. As one of the highest pre-ordered games following the announcement - it's safe to say there's some buzz about it.

The New Classic

The trailer announcement of Metroid Dread gets us excitable for reasons of nostalgia. The game appears like that classic platform action-adventure we've come to live, with the added modern twist of immersive graphics and tweaked combat mechanics. All that run, jump, and blast is still there, with a colossal palette of enemies, bosses, and puzzles to conquer.

The look and feel of Metroid Dread, despite a follow-up from 2002's Metroid Fusion, is fluid as one could expect. The platform mechanics look refreshing as Samus uses the environment around here to strategically neutralize foes. It seems to be the game that omits an in-depth storyline to deliver some engaging gameplay - and there's nothing wrong with that.

One of the most significant mechanics to be added to Metroid Dread is the use of stealth. Instead of the run-and-gun approach associated with all Metroid games, players will take more versatile approaches when overcoming challenges. It's an exciting premise that's sure to create some speedrun creativity!

Apart from views of gameplay - there isn't much more on offer. We'll have to wait further to discover the backstories, levels, and full scope of design in Metroid Dread. What's certain is that the game already looks to be a winner in the hearts of platforming enthusiasts. It is the deity of the genre, after all. Dread is getting all sorts of attention for the right reasons.

Nothing to Dread

Metroid has always been a franchise that hasn't traditionally won over a new fanbase. From its early days, it sort of built an initial following and carried its audience through decades of releases. There's nothing to suggest that Metroid Dread is trying to break the boundaries of the nostalgic player-base - but its beautiful presentation is honing in on fans anew.

Metroid Dread isn't bringing the excitement of fellow platformers that the Mario franchise would conjure. However, its long development cycle and hype are putting some attention on it. What we can say without any hesitance is that it looks good. Here's to hoping it plays just as well on its October 21st release date!

  • One of the most fluid looking platform games
  • New stealth mechanics diversify combat approach
  • The environmental design looks stunning
