What shocked me the most about Monster Energy Supercross 5 was the five in the title! I cannot believe that this is the fifth game in this series. The thing with this is that it has a real niche audience. You have to actually be interested in the sport to want to check this game out. I just do not see anyone having an interest in this who is not already a fan of the sport. If you are a fan and want a deep supercross sim then this is a game that is probably going to give you many, many hours of entertainment.

Going For The Top

As you would expect, Monster Energy Supercross 5 has a very deep career mode that will take you from the bottom all the way to the top. You start out as a no name rookie looking for their first sponsorship. What I think is really cool about this is that once you get that first sponsorship, you then get to join an established team or you can create your own. You start off racing in the 250SC class, but your ultimate goal is to join the big boys in the 450SX class and prove that you are the best rider in the world.

Being One With The Bike

Back in the day, a game like Monster Energy Supercross 5 would have been an arcade style racing game. This though is a full on simulation and there is a real learning curve to get to grips with how to play the game properly. The game has a pretty deep training system that will allow you to keep your rider in shape. How well you do in races, nagging injuries and even your training sessions can all affect the next race. It may take a while to get to grips with the handling, but I do feel that is part of the appeal of a game like this.

Practice Makes Perfect

One aspect of Monster Energy Supercross 5 that is really cool is the track editor. Here you can not only build your own tracks, but you can also share your tracks with the community. In theory, you will have access to a never ending series of tracks to mess around on. Speaking of tracks, there is another part of the game called the Compound and the idea here is that you can practice runs, tricks, and so on either on your own or with a buddy. Speaking of playing with your buddies, like the previous game, multiplayer is going to play a big role in this game and they are already touting this as a big deal for pro eSports!

I get that for some folks, Monster Energy Supercross 5 is going to be a very easy pass for them. However, I actually think that they have built upon what worked last year to make this an even deeper and more engaging supercross sim. Fans of the sport are in for a real treat with this one. While I think that the career mode looks great, I am sure it will be the multiplayer aspect that keeps me going for a very long time.

Pros:

The career mode appears to be more in-depth than ever before
I love the idea of making and sharing tracks
To be good at this game requires some real skill
The multiplayer aspect of this game could be huge!

Cons:

You do have to love the sport to truly appreciate this game
The last game in the series had quite a few bugs that took a while to get fixed, I hope the launch here is smoother
