Honestly, Monster High: New Ghoul in School is not a horrible game at all, and I would dare say that this is better than it has any right to be. I am a little bit familiar with the franchise as my niece is really into collecting the dolls and watching the show, so when I came across the Wii U version of this for the grand total of two British pounds, I thought, what the hell and picked it up. If you are a fan of the franchise, I truly think that you will have a lot of fun with this game. If you are not a fan of the franchise but you have a thing for monsters, you may be surprised at how fun this adventure game can be.
The New Kid… Or Monster
One of the things that is pretty neat about Monster High: New Ghoul in School, and the title kind of gives this away, is that you play as a brand new character. The game starts by letting you create your character, and there are a whole bunch of monster types for you to build your character around, such as werewolf, zombie, Frankenstein, vampire, and many more. You have many different options for the way that your character looks and what they wear, and I was very impressed with how easy it was and with how much fun it was to bring a new monster to life!
Taking Over The School
The story of the game is pretty fun, and Monster High: New Ghoul in School has a main villain who is a mummy, and he is trying to take over the school. You need to help the famous Monster High characters put a stop to this from happening. In addition to this, you also have the typical high school drama to deal with, such as dealing with cool and jerk students. I think if you are into the series, you will get a real kick out of this, and it has a kind of Persona 5 thing going on with the various social dynamics. Granted, the story is mostly linear, but there are a few situations where you do actually get to make some dialogue options and change things a little bit.
High School Never Ends
Hey, I am sure I have used that Bowling For Soup reference before, but it is very fitting for Monster High: New Ghoul in School. This is a pretty fun game; you basically have to juggle a series of quests for different Monster High characters, mainly doing fetch quests, going from point A to point B, playing a few mini games, and so on. There are times you can go off and explore, and if you are a fan of the show, I am sure you will get a kick out of this, and you can find some fun stuff. I do wish that the social system had a bit more to it. I do not expect anything like Persona here, but the rather recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed showed how you could have a simplified version of the Persona social system. I will say, though, the map in this game kind of sucks and makes exploring a bit of a pain on some occasions.
That Funky Monster Style
This was released during the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U era, with me playing the Wii U version, and Monster High: New Ghoul in School looks pretty damn good. My niece has watched this on Netflix, and from what I have seen, the game captures the look, feel, and even sound of the show very well. I think fans will appreciate the attention to detail here, and if you are someone who is into spooky stuff, these monster designs are pretty damn awesome, and it is very easy to see why this has been such a popular series for so very long.
It would be so easy to just pass this off as a terrible tie-in game, but it is honestly far better than I expected it to be. This was the last generation where we would get lots of tie-in games like this, and I have to say that Monster High: New Ghoul in School impressed me. The game has a fun and cool setting, the gameplay has a lite RPG adventure game feel to it, and it was just a rather quirky and fun experience that I am glad I checked out. If you are a huge fan of the show, you could probably whack a whole extra point onto the score that I have given the game.
Pros:
- I had fun creating my own Monster High character
- The game has a bit of a lite Persona vibe about it
- I liked exploring the school
- Fans of this franchise will have a blast with this game
Cons:
- The map is pretty lame and hard to figure out
- There are a lot of fetch quests in this game

It was developed by Torus Games and published by Little Orbit in 2015 and is similar to Monster High: Ghoul Spirit. Monster High: New Ghoul in School is overall a pretty mediocre game. It was made to help sell the toys and promote the show and movies that go along with them. This shows as the overall quality of the game is lacking and is quite short, taking less than 10 hours to complete if you focus on the main story alone. If you add in the extras or go for completion, it may take up to 12 hours instead. It was clearly a ploy to sell more toys and other games and movies in the franchise.
PROS
- Cute
- Fun
- Great for kids
- Over 40 characters
CONS
- Short
- Lacking story
