Back when I was a kid, if I saw a game with Monster Outbreak on the box in the game store, I 100 percent would have picked it up! The reason I say that is because as well as the title, this game has a style that would have greatly appealed to me as a kid. Thankfully, I have grown very little (in terms of maturity I mean) so the whole style of this game still appeals to me now! While I was pulled in by the title and the graphics, it is the deep, fun, and challenging survival and tower defense style gameplay that kept me interested.
The Dimensional Orb
The plot of Monster Outbreak is kind of fun and the kind of thing you could see a Saturday morning cartoon being based around. There was this magical dimensional orb that promised to grant amazing wealth, knowledge, and advancements and it did just that. Of course, something like this was always going to have a sinister edge and now monsters are appearing all over the land. We play as Yula and she is the one who needs to try and stop the monsters and return the land back to the way it once was.
The Legend Of Yula
When I first saw the graphics of Monster Outbreak, it was The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past that I was reminded of. It has a retro top down style to it and I think that it looks absolutely fantastic. The fantasy world that has been created here is full of color and wonder and I think that the various monster designs are all a lot of fun too. A very fitting soundtrack ties it all together, which helps make this a real joy to play.
Defend Your Land
The gameplay of Monster Outbreak is a mixture of different styles. You have a tower defense style of gameplay where you have to place various turrets around to keep the monsters at bay. There is a lot of strategy at play here as you try and create massive death zones to stop the monsters in their track. In between waves of enemies, you can run around and repair broken turrets, make upgrades, and so on. There is also a bit of exploration and crafting in the game too, it always feels like you are working towards upgrading something so that can be pretty addictive.
Taking The Fight To Them
The most fun aspect of the combat in Monster Outbreak is when you leap into the battle yourself. Sure, the towers and defensive traps you lay are great, but using your own skills to fight the monsters is really where it is at. There are even bosses that you have to face too. I like how there is more personal combat, exploration, and crafting in the game as well as the tower defense style stuff.
I wish I could give you a full release date for Monster Outbreak, but it still does not have one, it just says coming soon. However, they do update their Steam page quite frequently and there is an awesome demo on there that will get you pretty hyped up for the game. Do not just think of this as a tower defense style of game, it offers so much more than that!
- I like how the visuals have a kind of SNES Zelda vibe to them
- The tower defense and survival aspect of the game is a lot of fun
- I like how you can explore, craft, and repair stuff between waves
- You can also get mixed in with the combat and fight the enemies yourself!
- When the heck is this thing actually coming out?
- Some people might not be willing to give this a try due to the tower defense elements
