Japan has always been one of the most important countries in the gaming industry, and they’ve kept a standard of making some of the best games ever, and even the best consoles too. And they are the creators of anime and manga, and we all know that they get along perfectly with gaming, so the relationship between Japan and gaming is a really intimate one. It is also worth noting that when it comes to RPG games, Japanese titles are the number one, and they’ve been for as long as the genre has existed. And that’s exactly where games like Nihongo Quest come in for every fan of Japan and the Japanese gaming world. But what is Nihongo Quest and what’s it all about?
About the game
Nihongo Quest is a Japanese role-playing game specially created to explore, learn, and understand the Japanese language. It is actually an educational game for those who are into learning this incredible language but don't feel like studying it traditionally. This game is aimed to teach the player through gaming, and it is a proven method for learning the language.
As you explore the world of Gakushu you’ll battle enemies, race against them, and even draw your way to victory. There are some puzzles too, and exploration, but the main way to progress in Nihongo Quest is by actually learning and applying everything you learn. There are a thousand words to learn here, and this includes all the basic characters and some kanji too.
Learn how to read and understand the Japanese characters, as well as how to write and memorize them more efficiently. Fighting the enemies is basically a way of taking tests, and using everything you learn is all you can do if you really plan to earn your way to victory.
Learning in gaming
It may sound a little weird to actually play an RPG that is an educational game, but learning in gaming is not at all a new concept. After all, there are educational games even developed by the biggest AAA brands in the industry, such as Pokemon: Typing Adventure, a game that uses a physical keyboard to have the player go through levels and catch Pokémon. Sure, learning how to type and learning a language is not the same thing.
But believe it or not, many non-English speakers learned the language by playing video games. Using the words as you learn them is a great way to understand things, especially as you are not just memorizing stuff out, you're actually going through a cognitive process here.
As far as education goes in Nihongo Quest, it works great, the system is efficient and nicely planned out. However, this is a video game review, and sadly we have to consider the gaming elements of it. And that aspect isn’t as good, it has many flaws that make the gaming experience dull.
The gameplay is repetitive and monotone, the visuals, and art aren't as interesting as they would need to to make the whole educational thing more appealing. Not to mention that the actual gameplay is basically a really long test.
Pros:
- You’ll learn a lot
- Good for you
Cons:
- Repetitive
- Boring gameplay
- Dull art
