For anyone looking for a game with an interesting premise, you might want to take a look at pixel-based adventure game One Dreamer. The title is developed by One Dreamer Company and already has an interesting prologue out there.
While it’s hard to tell exactly what kind of game this is going to be, the art style quickly reminds us of something like Children of Morta. The setting, style, and theme, though, looks very different.
Cracking the code
The interesting idea behind One Dreamer is that you will be spending your time manipulating the world that you reside within. Your job will be to use the source code of the world that you are working in and make changes to the world as you go.
You take on the role of a burnt out video game developer who has reached a period of mental exhaustion. In One Dreamer, you will be asked to help them fulfil their lifelong dream whilst going through an arduous, challenging process. It is one of the many reasons why people see games like One Dreamer as a good example of how indie games development can offer something different.
To stand out, games developers tend to be pretty specific with how they work. They have to be very particular with their ideas and how they put said ideas across. This leads to inventive plots and ideas that go far outside what a AAA company would ever consider.
While games like this can often fall flat on their face, One Dreamer offers enough interesting ideas from what we can learn about it to see it is something different. In some ways it feels like it could have the hints of something like a 2D take on Heavy Rain, with a very confusing world that comes with many chances to shape the direction of the story. Like many other game releases that are not yet given a solid date, though, we can only really speculate as to what kind of details One Dreamer will include.
An adventure puzzle worth solving
As we wait for more details to unfold about One Dreamer, the one thing we can say is that the idea looks unique. The problem with unique ideas is that they often can be more ambitious than the developer can handle.
With that in mind, we have a cautious interest in how One Dreamer is going to turn out. It has a solid idea, but the lack of clear information about the game and its structure does make it a little tougher to work out what we will get.
From the idea alone and the fact it brings an interesting idea of source code manipulation into a game itself to its intriguing art style, though, there is much to capture the imagination with here.
- Impressive art design that looks like it should fit the story aesthetic well
- Intriguing gameplay style that adds a new style to a 2D adventure game
- Not enough details yet on the moment-to-moment gameplay
