Phantom Blade Zero

Phantom Blade Zero is a mysterious new game soon to be released on PlayStation. The fantasy action game set in feudal China promises to bring players into an immersive experience filled with adventure and perhaps a dash of steampunk. Players are put in the shoes of Soul, an assassin framed for the murder of the leader of The Order. Soul was mortally wounded by saved by a magic healer at the beginning of the game—but there’s a catch. The healer could only preserve his life for 66 days. Soul must find out who framed him and bring justice to his own death before succumbing to his wounds.

Exciting Combat

Much of what we know about this exciting new RPG is from an amazing demo performed at The Playstation Showcase. There, viewers caught a glimpse of amazing graphics and bold animations, but also amazing combat. The demonstration revealed many physics-bending fight styles, with the character able to run up walls, knock bigger opponents off balance by crashing back to earth, and literally dodging bullets.

This exciting combat promises to make gamers take a whole new dimension into account when trying to decide if they can take on an enemy—or twenty—while playing the game. The game developers clearly spent a lot of time on combat, because the game regularly makes you think while fighting. There are multiple different attack options, but you can only choose one, and it better be the right one.

The game pressures players to be perfect in their movements, and it’s not afraid to test players on their abilities in combat. It’s a game for people who have real skill and want a chance to show it off. Although the game is much more precise when it comes to combat, it also doesn’t waste your time with thousands of trash mobs. When a player fights a mob in the game, it doesn’t immediately respawn. This lets players focus more on fighting when it matters, and not mere button mashing.

Decent Story

Phantom Blade Zero has been kept fairly well under wraps. We can tell that it’s a lot like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty in tone and combat, but Phantom Blade Zero is clearly going to be a unique game all its own.

The trailers and gameplay do hint at a deeper story though, with well developed characters that hint at nuances to come. A woman with a cracked porcelain face suggests some serious story behind it, and so do many of the other well-developed characters in the game.
