I have to say that Red Solstice 2: Survivors as soon as it was announced became one of my most anticipated games of 2021. I loved the first game and this one is looking to add even more to a formula that I had a great deal of fun with. This is a real time tactics-style RPG that is very deep, but it does not have this huge barrier of entry. It is fun, do not get me wrong it is challenging, but the game is more about you having fun than frustrating you and making you feel dumb!
Saving Mankind
I am a huge lover of sci-fi and I think that Red Solstice 2: Survivors has a fantastic story that is going to well and truly get you invested. The game is set many, many years in the future and you have been awakened to try and save mankind. Mankind is under threat from this mutant virus that will destroy us all unless you and your squad can save the day.
I know that the thought of fighting monsters, aliens, or mutants is nothing new, but I think this is a very cool premise for the game to have and it is certainly something I am going to get fully invested in.
Thinking About Survival
The core gameplay of Red Solstice 2: Survivors is very interesting. You have to survive the threat of The Strol virus, but you have to keep moving forward too. You have to think on the fly as the battles take place in real time and there is a ton of stuff to keep an eye on in this game. You need to explore the planet to find resources and so on so you can get better equipment to fight them off.
This virus is taking over the planet and it is really cool how this virus is spreading and the way it spreads can drastically alter the map. It is like it is thinking and reacting to your every move. This is a tactics-based game, but it also has a great deal of action too. The missions are quite varied to and tend to fall into three categories. Stealth missions have you needing to sneak around grabbing something or taking down a threat as quietly as possible. Survival missions are when all hell has broken loose and you are in an all-out war! Exploration-based missions are exactly what they sound like, you are exploring to find new things that will help the war effort.
Showing Some Class
Red Solstice 2: Survivors has six different classes to play as. Assault, demolition, heavy-support, marksman, medic, and recon are the different classes. Each one has its own kind of playstyle and I would certainly recommend that you try and experience them all. You can actually play this as a team with your buddies and it can support up to eight players which is really cool.
Starship Troopers
They made this awesome Starship Troopers animated series back in the late 90s and that is the kind of vibe I am getting from the visuals of this game. It is played from a kind of zoomed-out point of view, but things are still very detailed. I like the way there are so many types of mutants for you to fight and the explosion effects are just awesome.
It is the kind of game that at first glance may not appear to be a looker, but once you start to play it, you realize just how detailed this world they created is.
If you like strategy games, but strategy games that also have a ton of action, Red Solstice 2: Survivors is the game for you. I loved the first game, but I do not think you need to play through that before you jump in here. It is probably the best game of this style to be released in 2021 and I have a sneaking suspicion it may appear on my top 20 of the year list.
Pros:
- I love the sci-fi setting and story
- There are many different classes to play as
- While this is a “tactics” game, it is pretty damn action-packed too
- You can play with your friends
Cons:
- It may have a slight learning curve
- I am sure it is going to be so addictive, you ignore all your other games
