Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom

Are you a ‘90s kid? If that’s the case, you probably remember and played RPGs. Those are titles where you were against a demonic beast or an angelical monster in a turn-based game that could take endless hours of your time. In these games, you were able to explore every single corner of the map only to find the best weapons or the most unique collectibles, and overall, it was an excellent experience. Thanks to those RPGs, the genre is still alive, and there are people who still remember these games with a lot of love. That’s why we have Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom.

This is an RPG but with a little yet great twist, as it’s packed with references and humor that mocks the usual clichés you can find in the classic RPGs, even to the point where you can see a character summoning a big piece of flan to attack their enemies.

The Last of the Saga

Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom is the last game of the Rhapsody saga, which is very known to be games that aren’t serious at all and are meant to make you laugh rather than offering a thrilling story. That’s exactly the aim of Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom, which mocks all of those old RPG clichés you can find on any Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger out there.

It’s hilarious to see how you can have a character that summons the best spells you can see, with the most beautiful effects out there, to attack the enemies, and then, suddenly, one of the members of your party brings out a gun and shoot at the enemies in the simplest yet most funny way you can see in a game. And let’s not skip the fact that you can also attack with a gigantic flan!

It’s fair to say that you must play the first two Rhapsody games to understand this one, as its story takes exactly from the previous Rhapsody. Cornet, the ruler of the Marl Kingdom and Kururu, her daughter, will solve all of those arcs that got opened in the first two games, like Kururu’s pending marriage and the resolution of what happened to Cherie, Cornet’s mother.

The Marl Kingdom is Alive!

The character design of Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom is excellent. They are heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger, using a color palette with sepia-ish tones that you can easily relate to the famous franchise. There are beasts that look a lot like things you can find in the real world, like wolves, mushrooms, etc. Their design takes inspiration from Final Fantasy VII, and you can notice this since the start, as even the HUD features look a lot like they were taken from FFVII.

Rate: 6/10

Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom is a very enjoyable game, but only if you’ve played the previous games. If you don’t play the previous games, you’ll be heavily confused with what’s going on, and that makes things a bit unpleasant for the player.

Other than that, the gameplay is good, the music is decent, the 3D models are decent as well, and the game looks beautiful.
