It seems like it has been forever since I played a good text-based adventure game and then Roadwarden comes along. While I have described this as a text-based adventure game and that is what it is best described as. It does have many other fun things to the gameplay such as RPG elements, crafting, and survival elements too. It makes for a good mix and the fantasy style story that is being told here is truly epic and full of many twists and turns that will keep you invested right until the very end.

The Right One For The Job

The plot of Roadwarden is fantastic and like something out of an 80s movie. I do not know what it is, but I get vibes from 80s classics like Steel Dawn and Beast Master. We play as a Roadwarden who is a person that takes jobs from people in town to do things like help travelers, make connections between the villages and protect people from the creatures that call this place home. It is pretty awesome the way you have so much freedom when it comes to creating the character that will become the hero of this story.

An Extra Special Job

In Roadwarden, you take a very special job that sees one of the most powerful guilds in the town and wants you to head to a rather unknown part of the world to try and make ties there so that they can further expand their merchant business. You need to explore and find out more about this strange new land. It leads to some fantastic exploration and developments in the story and if you are a fantasy buff, you will get a real kick out of it all.

No Rest For The Weary

While Roadwarden is a text-based kind of game, there is actually a fair bit of depth to the gameplay. You will have to manage your inventory well and there are some fun and basic puzzles related to this as you try to figure everything out. There are dialogue options you will have to be careful with, character progression as you improve your stats, and more. It truly is a blend of many different styles, but thanks to the UI and the rather “easy to get” nature of it all, it all feels very intuitive.

My Apple II Could Not Do This

I fell in love with the visual style of Roadwarden pretty much the moment I saw the initial trailer a little while back. While most of the game takes place with various texts. The story is brought to life with this amazing and very retro looking pixel art. It really is something very special and it helps you picture this world that they have created in your mind that little bit more which I found helped me get even more invested in the story.

I really did have a wonderful time with Roadwarden. This is something that I feel is a real hidden gem and the kind of game more people need to play. Actually, if I had to suggest a text-based adventure game to someone that had never given this genre a chance before, it would be this game 100 percent. It has many of the elements that I loved about these types of games as a kid, but they also have other types of gameplay in here too which makes it more fun and keeps you more invested with what is happening.

Pros:

I love the style of the graphics
It tells a very well-written and engaging fantasy style story
I liked how there was some actual gameplay here
There is a pretty impressive amount of choice when it comes to creating your character

Cons:

I feel that some people just may not be willing to give a game like this a chance
While a second play through could be quite different, I have not felt the desire to do so…. yet!
